My latest eBay purchase, it's pretty good, not quite a true Sonic game, but a pretty good effort from Travellers Tales IMO.

I use to play this game for genesis on my Sega Nomad. Not the best Sonic game but I still had a lot of fun wasting time with it

Not a fan of this one. I could never adjust to the isometric controls... I did like the Saturn version special stages though.

Yeah, this just doesn't feel like Sonic to me. Even though there are still loops and all that, everything is just so sloooooow. The Sonic games all made their marks with multiple layers on each level that would allow for different routes to be chosen by preference. This one is so simply straightforward it becomes almost mundane. Not to say it's a bad game - Traveler's Tales have done what they could with the formula, but it still feels like a black sheep. They'd redeem themselves and the franchise with the totally awesome Sonic R, though!

I think the problem is that people expect a Sonic game when they play this. Personally I think it's a very well made game... well... the Megadrive version at least. (I can't stand the musical score and loading times of the Saturn version) It's great as a standalone. Just replace the character and you have a fresh game.

i enjoyed the Megadrive version alot better my problems with it are mainly colour related (show how much i think its an ok game) tails = gold knuckles fluorescent pink sonic = weird white and blue :/
(i realise they were trying to get it to look like light was shining on sonic)
another problem i had was the bonus levels were annoying, mainly because they didn't really change just the background colour and speed.
when this game came out on the MD i was about i duno, 8 or 9. i use to annoye me that i would get to that weird red and yellow level (dont remember the name) and loose all my lives :/ i only ever got the ice level after it once and lost my last life within a matter of seconds.

I'd agree with most of that (apart from the Saturn vs MD stuff, I've not played the MD version), if it weren't a Sonic title I suspect that most people would be praising it as an above average platformer, unfortunately though since it is a Sonic title an above average plaftorm game isn't enough it needs to be special and really stand out. I do enjoy playing it on the odd occasion but there are other games I'd rather play.

It's not the fact that it's Sonic, it's just that the mechanics feel as if they are meant for a 16-bit console, not something as fresh as the Saturn. Even when it came out it felt dated compared to platformers like Bug! and Clockwork Knight. I much prefer even side scrolling to isometric platformers. I just don't think that perspective lends well to games where you are having to collect items and jump on platforms. Too tough to tell depth.

I brought a Saturn for this game, although I didn't buy the game until about a year after I brought the system (couldn't find it and I was too busy with other awesome games at the time. SSM's review put me off it too).
The soundtrack is the best part of the game and the special stages are cool. I'm not keen on the almost static Sonic sprite, and the controls make it feel like Sonic's skating on ice. The fog effects on the Rusty Ruins levels are cool and really add to the atmosphere of that level. I hate the loading times, especially coming out of the special stages, and the fact that you can't save creates a sense of monotony because most of the end levels become very similar. Most of the time I finish Volcano Valley then turn it off as I've already played the best levels in the game. I hate Spring Stadium though. Some of the level designs and gimmicks are interesting though.
It's not a great Sonic game, but it's nice to pull out occasionally and listen to the awesome soundtrack.

On a remotely related note Travellers Tales have a few Saturns strewn about their offices!

on even less related note, i used to like Toy Story (for MD) by Travelers Tales!
although, Sonic 3D related, i played it for the first time in a few years :/ and actually completed it (this was the MD version)
also, when i first had the game i accidently found a level select cheat.... does anyone know how to do this?

I couldn't have possibly known this at the time, but Sonic 3D is one of Travellers Tales' all-time weakest efforts on a purely technical level. Toy Story had a stunning first-person corridor shooting level, while Sonic R was quite possibly the best looking Saturn racer, if not a candidate for one of the console's finest moments regardless of its genre. As for more recent games, only recently has the policy of a consistent 60fps been broken in the Lego series. By comparison, the greatest thing about Sonic 3D was its 32-bit bonus stages, which were actually the work of Sonic Team. Still, it's not all bad - TT did redeem its programming reputation with Sonic R. Now if only it would relax the rule of creating each new game engine from scratch, because I'm sure we missed some absolute killer titles because the Sonic R assets were never recycled...
On the subject of this game, has anyone else here played the recently leaked Saturn prototype of Sonic 3D? Still in the "alpha" stage of development, it lacks the final version's environmental effects, special stages and only the first zone has yet to receive its final 32-bit graphical upgrade. Rusty Ruin half resembles its MegaDrive source, and this code proves TT was developing the Saturn edition near simultaneously to its 16-bit counterpart. History suggests that Sonic 3D was ported to the Saturn as a quick replacement for the ill-fated Xtreme project, though now it seems this was not the case, after all. If this wasn't a rush job, how come they didn't give us a few other new features? Not being able to save kills Sonic 3D dead for me, as does the way both final areas are virtually interchangeable!

How does the Alpha of the Saturn version using the Megadrive's graphical assets prove that, exactly? They could have just been used as place holders until the higher quality renders of objects were completed That is not really proof af anything other than at one point the Saturn version had the MD version's graphics It could even be proof that at one point they intended to just port it with no upgrades at all...
