Hey X, Whilst I'm not on Youtube myself, I do enjoy watching Lorfarious's videos. Do you have a Youtube channel yourself as I stumbled upon one last night with the same username as yourself? If so I also thoroughly enjoyed your vids, very entertaining and a nice collection of retrogames I reckon you could pick up a model 1 or 2 PAL Saturn for relatively cheap and then invest in an Action Replay 4 in 1 to enjoy the import games. I also use an RGB scart cable which gives out very good picture quality as opposed to an RF unit so try and get one of those to. The differences between the model 1 and 2 PAL Saturn are purely aesthetic as far as I'm aware. No technical advantage with the model 2. Try and get the model 2 controller though as its more ergonomic and comfortable. I'd initially recommend PAL copies of Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Die Hard Arcade, NiGHTS, Street Fighter Alpha 2 & Panzer Dragoon 2 as they should be cheap to come by. Hope some of this info helps. The Saturn really is a gem of a console. Anyways, welcome again and good luck with your Saturn collection. You won't regret it! ;D

Thanks for the recommendations matey - and yes thats me on YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/XFile2708A couple of people have said to me now to go for a PAL Saturn and to buy the Action Reply which I've seen for around £20... The Saturn is going to be one of my main consoles so I was hoping to get the Jap one because I've been told it runs so much quicker and the games do look better... Would buying the Action Reply do this as well? Thanks for the comments and the pointers matey - much appreciated

Hi there xfile2708, welcome You will find as a general Saturn gamer a very large portion of your collection will become imports, for this purpose I would recommend a JAP Saturn, the AR cart is great but you will still have to add a 50/60Hz switch to your console to get the games running full speed.

I decided to test the differences between my PAL and NTSC Saturns and hopefully help clear up any confusion about which machine to get, PAL or NTSC (Jap). PAL Saturns output in 50Hz as opposed to 60Hz for NTSC Saturns. Whilst there are no graphical differences in the games running on either format, PAL does result in slower gameplay and horizontal screen boarders. The Action Replay won’t force your PAL Saturn to output in 60Hz. It will simply allow you to run import games on your PAL machine albeit with the horizontal boarders and slower gameplay. There are also issues with sound and graphics when running imports on a PAL Saturn via the Action Replay, particularly with Capcom fighters. (In my test I found the sound was out of sync/distorted on Street Fighter Zero 2 & background graphics were not visible in Marvel Vs Capcom) Not a fault of the Action Replay but more a case of forcing imports to run through a PAL Saturns native 50Hz output. With this in mind I would also opt for importing an NTSC Saturn despite the cost of the console itself, shipping and possible Customs charges. Along with an Action Replay you could run RAM Cart compatible titles like the various Capcom Fighters, Metal Slug etc as well as running your PAL games without the boarders and slower gameplay. However, the PAL Saturn and Action Replay would be your cheapest route if you shop around. One last bit of advice would be to check your TV is 60Hz/NTSC compatible with an RGB enabled scart socket if you decide to go for the import Saturn.

That's a genuinely excellent start to your collection and what a bargain price you got it for Top stuff! The Predator lightgun is excellent for Virtua Cop 2 which is itself the best lightgun game on the Saturn I reckon. Sega Rally is amazing and has aged really well and Tomb Raider will give you many hours of gameplay. I really enjoyed it back in the day. Daytona is another decent racer. Looking forward to some videos on your youtube channel

And as always, there are optimised PAL games, optimised to run at full speed on PAL.
But not all the full-speed optimised ones run without borders.
The list of PAL optimized games online is... misleading, at best.
