First of all, hey everyone. I'm new to the wonderful world of SEGA Saturn, but it seems what should be the happiest day in my video game concerning video games has taken a turn for the worse.
Got my SEGA Saturn yesterday, and i can safely say i've never been happier when it comes to investing in a video game console. For the first time in a good while i was happy. The console is a PAL version 1 with a 50/60hz switch and 2 switches for Japan/NTSC. It's in mint condition, and looks freakin' awesome. Played it for about 2 hours last night, getting my ass handed to me in Layer Section. Everything was fine and dandy, then it went south.
Got home from work, played some Layer Section, for about an hour. Then decided to try out some Panzer Dragoon Zwei, but for some strange reason the Saturn couldn't read the disc. And, there was strange rolling vertical lines on the screen. Tried restarting several times, with different games but same thing. Then i waited awhile, tried to get some answers of the net. Tried again after 15 min and it worked, it chould read the game and no lines. Played some more Panzer Dragoon and was about to swap disc to SEGA Rally....same crap again. Can't read the CD, and those damn lines.
I'm on the verge of breakdown now. Especially since i last night ordered japanese Saturn games for 200 Euro. Please, anyone know what the hell is wrong with my Saturn?

this sucks.....Try to clean the lens with a qtip an some rubbing alcohol. Second clean the mechanism in the Saturn that lets the CD-spin. Clean your Saturn (see photo) anyway..welcome to the Saturn forum.

OK, thx i will try that.
Also, the problem seem to be consistent. When i play a game for more than 15 min, and then swtich to another game i get the lines and can't read CDs. So it has to do with the playtime.
I don't know anyone with a Saturn, but i think the left side of the console gets kinda warm after just 15 min. Is that normal?

On the left side is the built in power supply. That thing gets warm...that`s normal.

I haven't heard of this particular problem. It definitely seems like a overheating issue though. However, left side of the system getting warm would be normal, as that's where the power supply unit resides.
Do you have a screenshot this "vertical line" screen?
And just to confirm a hunch, per chance, are you getting flashing power lights when it doesn't want to boot the game?

Wish i had a camera that was working, then i could take a shot of the lines.
Basically, there are white lines rolling in the background. Slightly flickering. Kinda like the ones you can get when the scart/s-video cable is bad/broken i think. Btw, not sure what you mean with flashing power light. Do you mean if the lights on the SEGA Saturn are flashing?
Later today im gonna have a friend who knows his way around electronics take a look at the Saturn. And while he's at it, im gonna clean the parts Fisher posted above. See if it helps.

The rolling vertical lines IS an overheating issue almost entirely limited to Model 1 Saturns.
I'm pretty sure (could be wrong!) the rooling lines is interfearence caused by the power board overheating, VDP overheating usually creates artifacts on screen as opposed to rolling lines.
Your have 4 options:
a) never play on your model 1 saturn for more than 30 mins at a time (yea right!)
b) Install a small PC fan on the upper casing above the powerboard extracting the heat through pinholes (will still overheat with excessive play)
c) Attempt to fit a model 2 Saturn power supply.
d) pack your precious model 1 away and buy a model 2 for hardcore sessions.

The trick is to not power the machine off when swapping games. It's the powering on/off process that kickstarts it. If for some reason, you have to power on and off, just after the saturn has powered on, try bashing the on/off switch twice so fast the console itself doesn't register it.
This sometimes (for reasons unbeknown to me) gets rid of the lines and allows the system to behave as normal.

Hmm, that's a kinda good idea. Gonna test it out. But i guess since it seem to be a power supply problem, it's gonna overheat sooner or later. Especially if i really take it out for a long spin.
I'm gonna buy a loose PAL Model 2 Saturn, and i've managed to get a friend to make region/60hz switches on it. And by the gods i hope i wont have any problems with it.
As for the Model 1, i figured, that i could keep an eye on ebay for a really cheap crappy Model 1 and buy that one and just swap the power supply units. That's so easy even i can make it. And i managed to fail making lasagna in the microwave last night.
Anyways, about the Model 2. Just a quick question. Does all the cables from my model 1(power cord and RGB SCART) work on a Model 2? I gotta ask considering what SEGA did with the MegaDrive 1 and 2. Compability = not so great.
