Hi, bit of a Saturn noob here, just wondering what the best controller is? Also, maybe what the best value controller is, if the best one is expensive. Thanks!

In my opinion the model one controller is one of, if not the best controller ever made.
I'd go for them first, but if not then the model two controllers are almost as good.
Welcome by the way.

Thanks for the welcome!
I figured the standard model one's or two's would be the best. I've seen a lot of 3rd party controllers for really cheap, just wondered if they were even worth the fiver. Apparantly not lol

Also: Is the 3D controller worth buying if I don't have NiGHTS? The answer's probably yes, and I'll most likely get one eventually, just wondering if it improves gameplay dramatically.

If you can find a 3d controller cheap then it's worth picking up, though it's pretty much essential for Nights as playing that with a regular controller is awkward. I find it benefits some games, like Wipeout where you use the shoulder buttons for the brakes, the triggers give a lot more control allowing for better cornering. Apart from Wipeout, Nights and a couple other games though, I hardly use it.

As for the third party controllers...well there not bad but the model 1 and 2 controllers are much better. I'd buy one for a second player or maybe 3'd controller for a fiver though.

Model 2 by far is the best controller. Which is why still to this day its still being re-made for other systemns. Model 1 is okay but its d-pad is terrible and both the shoulder buttons are not as responsive as they should be. Model 2 pad is the best ALL rounder. It goes with every type of Saturn game. Racers, fighters e.t.c. If you like 2d fighters then you'll find model 1 pads very frustrating. Model 2's the best.

The thing I didn't like about 2 was its smother shape.

Yeah, the majority of the folks (including me) seem prefer mk2s over mk1 design, though there's no shortage of mk1 pad fans either. I've yet to find a 3rd party pad that I prefer over the original mk2 pads.
I personally don't like the 3D pad all that much, I find it a bit awkward to hold and my wrists in particular don't seem to cope well with it after some playing time on the pad.

Also: Is the 3D controller worth buying if I don't have NiGHTS? The answer's probably yes, and I'll most likely get one eventually, just wondering if it improves gameplay dramatically. I just received a 3d controller after wanting one for quite awhile. First impressions: a letdown I tried a few games that I've heard its compatible with a here are my impressions: Sega Rally - Almost uncontrollable. But may improve with practice. IMO, the Arcade Racer was made with this and Daytona in mind and it is excellent with them. The Arcade Racer makes the cars in High velocity handle like a bus though, even the Porsche. Will have to try the 3d contoller on it as it slipped my mind last night. Wipeout - Not too impressed. I think I like the Arcade Racer for this better as well. But the 3d controller worked better for this game than Sega Rally. I couldn't figure out how to lower/raise the nose of the racer with it. Nights - Works well with it but my thumb still hurt after one level. I don't really see much improvement over the standard controller. Sega Touring Car - Here we go! Finally this game is playable with the 3d controller. Although the final course was still a mess. Analog control of acceleration and brakes via the trigger buttons make all the difference.

I love the analog controller, and a surprisingly large number of games are compatible with it. Besides Nights Into Dreams, I've found it does wonders for Sonic 3D Blast and Enemy Zero.
Model 1 controller is the best. I need to look into getting a new one, as the wire on the one I have is worn away where it meets the controller.

I've had my Saturn for 14 years and my model 2 Pad still works as good as the day I bought it. From vs fighters to button bashing Athlete Kings. Its just as resonsive. My model 1 pad lasted the two years. First the shoulder bhguttons broke and then the d-pad screwed up. It really is a crumy pad plus the shape is awful. Model 2 is the way to go. You only see re-makes of the model 2 design nowadays so that should tell u something

Checked out High Velocity with the 3d controller last night and its not compatible. And Dark Savior while it says its compatible and in a way is, its really worthless as you can only change perspective with it and not control the character.
