I'm sort of ashamed to admit I've never played the original Virtua Fighter. I have Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighters Megamix and they are two of my favorite Saturn games. I was wondering if it would be worth the cash to buy the original. I know it's a piece of video game history, and most of the contemporary reviews are excellent. But I have also seen reviews touting it one of the worst arcade conversions ever. Who should I believe?

It's awful, but the charm and addictive qualities are there.
I like it, but not 100% for it's gameplay. Don't expect anything amazing. (Though, for it's time, it was and I remember playing it as a kid and being absolutely hooked)

If you get it just get Virtua Fighter Remix, same game but not as glitchy and with better graphics.

Definitely not the best arcade conversion but it's still so much fun to play.
Off topic but is Space Hulk any good? Might be my next purchase.

I actually like VF better than Remix. My thoughts exactly, the textures in VF Remix are just a mess aren't they? I'd rather have untextured models than badly textured models. The overall stage design and color pallet of the game is much more suited to block colours that the somewhat failed attempt at detailed texturing just don't seem to have - I wouldn't have minded the texturing had they stayed more faithful to what the colors of the original models - but Akira with brown hair? Come on guys... he's a Japanese kung fu master! Not some K-pop star! I absolutely love the Virtua Fighter Anniversery Edition rehash of VF4 on PS2, old school models being rendered in high quality just looks totally peachy, combined with the silky smooth VF4 character animations and move lists... it's like being in heaven, right? Well, maybe if there were a few naked virgins running about.

I'll always stand by the original Virtua Fighter. The series has always been in the depth of the control first and foremost, and even in its first incarnation at home it shines. The port isn't nearly as tight as VF2's was, but I think there is a real charm to those flat polygons - it gives the game almost an artistic abstract quality. VF Remix just feels like VF2 without Lion and Shun...again, not the same. I've got, and love, VF5 on the 360, but I always find myself coming back to the Saturn port, just because it is a perfect fighting system at its most elemental. Great stuff, don't overlook it!
