Hi all, Nothing too major just thought I would ask if this particular issue is commonplace with the Sega Saturn Memory Cartridge. The issue if you want to call it that, is quite simply every so often in the memory manager on my Sega Saturn, I notice a single save file taking up one block which looks something like a series of Ys, with various accents and garbage characters. Just curious as to whether it is something that occurs often or not =P It hasn't caused any problems with any of my savefiles in the few months that I have had it. Seems to just appear on its own from time to time. If it is doing it atm I will take a photo for you, if not well just have to take my word for it =) When I say atm I mean that whenever I see this file I delete it. So if it is there right now I shall take a photo before killing it Here is an image =)

Yeah, likewise. Pretty common. I get nervous when I start seeing that, as the whole memory cart seems to crap out on me from time to time where I have to format the whole thing (though I have backup carts, so I don't usually end up losing much in terms of save files)

Not sure why but it's common.

It's so common, the last time I bought a memory card off eBay the seller had to specify this problem in the auction description to cover his rear!

Most unusual indeed =P Honestly didn't think it would be so common, but it interests me to no end to tell you the truth =)

I never heard of it happening to a PAL region cart. I wonder if that's significant?

Hmmm its interesting at least =) maybe the chip set was changed somehow? Strange... yeah come to think of it I got mine from the USA so it would likely be an NTSC region cartridge.
Another thing, I have heard some people say the Sega Saturn Memory Cartridges are flash based, and others say they are battery based like the console. Anyone know which they are? Maybe it defers depending upon region and may explain why some cartridges are more prone to the garbage data showing up than others.
EDIT:First ever problem, went to play my Saturn, and I had a look in the memory section and my save files that were on the cartridge were on my system memory (they werent before) well as many as would fit into the system memory anyway. Only Daytona remained on my cartridge, which claimed it had only 27 blocks of free space after subtracting the amount of space Daytona was taking up. So I had to clear my cartridge in order to restore its full size =P
Oh well, one of the perils of using old electronics hardware I guess, least some of my saves were kept =S

Yea. Saturn Memory Cards are really unpredictable and for that reason, I don't use them EVER.
I just back everything up to two floppy disks from the Saturn's internal memory once I'm done playing for the day.
Mind you, doesn't an older model of the Action Replay have the ability to connect to the PC to transfer saves?

I have the one I bought new (1996) and that garbled save is the only problem I've ever had. My AR 4-1's and Game Sharks have the 25 pin connection for the PC.

I get the same files popping up on my cartridge, thoughit doesn't happen too often. I've noticed that they appear after I've played certain games. One of them is Wipeout.
I too have the official cart and I'm guessing it's PAL.

What port does it use? Parallel?
