Hi there, Im a canadian law student who is finishing an LLB this year in the uk. I just recently purchased a UK spec Pal sega saturn at a market for 20 pounds. I owned one of these many years ago (in canada) and I had the pro action replay unit so that I could be able to play japanese games on my american saturn. I made the mistake of selling it to a friend and since then I have always wanted another one. I will be graduating at the end of this year and I really want to bring my uk saturn back home with me. what should I do so that it will play on my ntsc television in canada? will an s video saturn connector off ebay do the trick? I am also aware of the power supply issues but I think I should be able to easily find an adaptor to cure this problem no? thanks in advance to all who respond to my post as im sure its a total newb question

You'll have to do the 50-60hz mod to keep the picture from rolling. doesent they have much garage sales in Canada ? Shouldent u just pick one upp there really cheap ? It would be rare to find a Saturn S-vid at a garage sale.

You can easily solve the power problem with a step-up converter or swapping out the power board with a US unit.
The video output may be a bit more of a problem, perhaps someone else n the US can comment of weather TVs over there generally accept PAL video ok?

I just can't believe that there is no way around this other than paying an exorbitant amount for a mod to be done. damn. so basically im screwed and I will have to buy another saturn when I get back home?

Maybe you would get more for an 'import' PAL console than it would cost for a NTSC replacement?

newer TVs should take the PAL signal (LCDs/Plasmas), but you'll have rolling picture problems on older CRT TVs.
That is, if you still have the action replay cart, use a step up converter, and play it on a LCD/Plasma screen, you should be able to play it okay back home. However, ALL NTSC games will play a tad slower, and will have a squashed look with black borders on top and bottom.
That said, the cost of a cheap second hand saturn won't be much more than a cheapo step-up converter, and it won't give you the limitations of the PAL saturn.
Bottom line: Get rid of the PAL saturn (unless you're willing to put in a 50/60Hz mod), and you can buy a cheapo replacement for less than $30 or so.

You could also attempt the mod yourself. Just solder some points to a switch. Eh? But I guess that takes experience. Dunno how you are with electronics. Oh, and we have another Canadian now!

I'm unsure as to why you even want to continue using a PAL Saturn when you move back to NTSC land? Thick borders round the edge of the screen, most of the games were poorly optimised, no decent exclusives (unless you're really itching to play Trash It or Deep Fear) plus they're not great for playing Jap imports.
The question is... Why?
