Anyone find a noticeable improvement with video quality when using the S-video attachment compared to standard composite? I only ask because the Saturn doesn't have a dedicated s-video port, it's combined with the composite jack, so I was curious if it gave a true S-video picture.
Sadly, all newer TVs don't even incorporate S-video jacks anymore. I'm looking into a new set now and realizing I'm going to have to get converters to play my Neo Geo and Saturn (if S-video is better on the Saturn). Speaking of HDTV's, how many of you play your Saturn on newer sets that are not CRTs? Any issues with over-scan or refresh rates? Thanks.

I play mine with an RGB SCART run through a converter to a Component video output and the difference is unbelievable. (I'm Canadian so I can't use the native RGB signal)
I'd recommend the upgrade definitely. I hear even S-Video is good. (Though this I haven't been able to confirm)
Being a CRT user, can't help you there.

The Official Saturn S-Video cable made a big difference, better colors, sharper picture, etc. A low price one off eBay made a slight improvement. It was only $6-7 more for an official one.
Only using crts myself.

i use a HD tv, but that's because i replaced my CRT since i had a tiny bedroom. i haven't noticed the tv causing problems, though i have nothing to compare it too. only thing i hate is when i play megadrive games and black areas have a static like effect, though i'm not sure that that is the tv's fault.

That's an official cable, they are the best. Again RGB is better, but being in the USA, RGB would cost you a fair bit, though worth the trouble.

This has been asked lots of times, S-Video is significantly better than composite, HDTV's are not ideal for using the Saturn or any other retro console on, mainly due to poor deinterlacing and scaling thats optimised for video, not videogames.
Sounds like your brightness is too high.

Sounds like your brightness is too high. thanks. i fucking hate brightness. i played WWII: Soldier on PS2, and once i finished the dark levels, someone told me that if i turned my brightness up i would be able to see what's going on, now your telling me it's too high (even though i set it back to normal). FUCK YOU brightness!!!

Well if your brightness is too low, you'll clip detail in the darker areas of the picture, if it's too high, you can get noise in the dark areas of the picture and you'll clip detail in the brighter areas of the picture. I'm just guessing for your problem though, could be caused by something else.

S-video quality compared to composite is a night and day difference with my Neo Geo. That is why I'm so upset new TVs are omitting it as an input.

If you can afford a Neo Geo, you can afford RGB

Of course, but it's not exactly a cheap option. Who wouldn't rather have the actual input source on their TV as opposed to paying for converters?

If you can afford a Neo Geo, you can afford RGB If only that was true. Lots of saving was required to obtain the Neo...Long time...

Lots of people since the right converters do a much better job than a HDTV does
