Either my Saturn is possessed, or something's broken inside. I haven't found anything corresponding anywhere else in the 'net, and here's what the machine does; All sounds (music, voices, etc) are both muffled and very, very slow. The video seems to be normal speed, but the gameplay seems to suffer very little from slowdown as well.
About a month ago I modded it with the chip and 50/60hz mod (it's a PAL machine.) The mods are installed flawlessly, this I can say. Saturn's pretty new console to me and I haven't really studied its insides that much at all.
SO this seems to be the best place to ask this question; What would be the most probable reason for this particular Saturn's malfunction at least in theory?
Oh, and it seems that it won't even boot up without Action Replay 4M inserted, and sometimes the game won't load up. At times not even the star-up screen stays black, unabling the use of console. Some games, like Radiant Silvergun, voicesovers work, but the sound doesn't and the game freezes. I uploaded few (very crude) videos of showing the problem.
Support is appreciated vastly.

The mods are installed flawlessly, this I can say. If it was working before you modded it, and this problem has arisen after you modded it I would guess that your statement above is not the case. Disconnect your chip first and run the system without it, see if that makes any difference, that will eliminate the chip from our list of possible issues. If it's still like this without the chip installed then you need to unwire your 50/60Hz switch and see if that makes any difference. Incidentally which mod ship did you use?

You need a RAM upgrade for your console mate! (sorry could not resist ) Sure, I'll just solder my broken C64's RAM unto it... Nevertheless, the machine has worked well after the mods. It's been a month or more since it was modded, and the modchip in question is the blue kind. I believe it is the one of the first, I might be wrong. The 50/60hz mod shouldn't cause any problems, as it just changes the ground value. Basically, in 50hz position the machine should run normally, but it doesn't. I wouldn't rule out that the chip that controls the hz freq. suddenly doesn't get proper voltage in or out.

Once again:
Disconnect your mod-chip first and run the system without it, see if that makes any difference, that will eliminate the chip from our list of possible issues.
Mod chips going bad are rare but certainly not unheard of, if it's screwing the clock up there's no telling what effect t may have.

Took apart the Saturn in question, and re-attached all wires. This seems to have done the trick, thou for some reason some discs still refuse to cooperate. I'm still checking the system, but I wouldn't really count out that the modchip is leaking voltage... EDIT; Yeah, the problem's back. Because the machine worked well for a time, I guess the either the motherboard is fried or there's a problem with the power unit.

Pretty weird. I did have a bad modchip once (well, still have it), where only certain audio was all scratchy (for example, the background music in RS sounded fine, but the voiceovers sounded all scratchy). But video/audio speed was unaffected.
My modchip is one of those ancient dual 20/21 pin modchips though.
As mick suggested, have you tried out the system for extended periods of time without the modchip?

It looks like the CD Ribbon cable was not connected properly. That explains the hangups, and why it was fixed just by reattaching everything.
Also, boot up the saturn with the cd ribbon disconnected, and you'll get pretty much the exact same screwed up sound effects in the bootup logo and the cd player.
Since the modchip sits inbetween the connection of the cd ribbon and the motherboard, I'd guess that some connection in that is faulty. If you are lucky, cleaning the contacts could work. If not, the modchip is busted. Does everything work perfectly without it? If so, it's the modchip.
And make sure that damn thing is insulated and not just sitting there naked on the heatsink.
