Maybe I imagined this, but I swear I remember somebody saying (once...I don't recall where or when) that having a video card installed on your Saturn improves the quality of FMV playback during games.
Is this true? And if not, is there any advantage to having one besides playing laserdiscs and the like?
Thanks for putting up with my possibly-stupid question.

The video cd card will allow you to play Video CDs, the MPEG edition of Lunar, and a select few games will have higher quality videos.
The affected games use CRI Sofdec video, and will have lower quality, smaller size videos without the card, higher quality and full screen with the card. The Mogitate demo discs and Vatlva are a few games to do this, but there are others too. All of them japanese releases though.
The video cd card will not improve all games however.

Well, unfortunately that just isn't true idolo. The cards are designed primarily to allow you to play VideoCD titles on your Saturn. Laser discs are a different proposition entirely (I'd like to see someone slotting one of those into a Saturn!! They're the size of an LP!!). Anyway, as far as I am aware the only games to take advantage of this add-on are: Chisato Moritaka Falcom Classics 1 - Limited Edition (disc 2) GunGriffon Lunar Silver Star Story (MPEG version) Moon Cradle Sakura Taisen Hangumi Tsuushin Sakura Taisen Steam Radio Show Vatlva Wangan Deadheat + Triangle Love *All of these are Japanese games. I recently picked up a JVC twin MPEG card just so that I can enjoy my newly aquired copy of Lunar Silver Star Story. You can't play the MPEG version of the game at all without the card!! Anyway, the selection of compatible games is very small indeed. So unless you have a desire to track down VideoCDs from the asian market (where the format was extremely popular), you won't find yourself with much of a reason to own one. I'll leave the performance of the cards available and the technical issues to someone else here. Hope that helps!!

I hear also Twinkle Star Sprites takes advantage of it for the opening FMV. Correct?

Twinkle Star Sprites uses CPK video.
Add these to that list: Mogitate Sega Saturn demo discs, all 6 volumes (dual stream sofdec) Saturn Super vol 7, 9, 11 (some of the demos have mpeg videos) Sentimental Graffiti (the opening has an MPEG version on CD 2) Yuukyuu no Kobako Official Collection (CPK to Mpeg)
These discs seem to use it too, but I don't have them so I can't confirm: Tech Saturn Tsuushin Vol. 5 Ultraman Zukan 2 Ultraman Zukan 3
edit: Wangan Triangle Love does not use mpeg videos, but Wangan Dead Heat + Real Arrange does.

It's strange that Wangan Deadheat + Triangle doesn't use the MPEG when in fact Wangan Deadheat + Real arrange does. Particularly as the former is actually listed on the card that came with my JVC Twin operator along with the other games I previously listed lol!! Cheers for the heads up though zyrobs.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess a video card is something I can pass on for the foreseeable future (at least until I've run out of other stuff to collect).
