I recently picked up Hexen and cannot figure out how to save my progress. I read Hexen takes a huge chunk of memory to save, but I can't even get to that part. When I press start and go to the game files screen all it will display is a password that is always the same (and states the level is Hub 1). Entering this password brings me back to the very beginning of the game. What am I doing wrong? In addition to the never changing password, it also states at the bottom that the game requires a ram cartridge to save the game (I currently have an Action Replay inserted). Anyway, I'm sure I must be missing the obvious, but I'm getting quite irritated

Yeah you need a real Saturn Save cart. Games cannot directly use the PAR save data.

Wow, that sucks. I kinda expected that all games should be able to save in the internal memory...

It's interesting that the size of the file Hexen creates to save is much, much larger than the Saturn's internal memory can even hold!
How does the password system in the game work? I've gone through about 5-6 ethereal portals and the game still claims I am in Hub 1. How many hubs are there in Hexen? Will the password change once I move on to Hub 2, 3, etc?

I finally got a chance to sit down and play all the way through hub 1. I wanted to at least complete it to see if the password system even worked. It did, but it's no fun having to rush around trying to complete tasks as quickly as you can just so you can get to the next save point. Before I continue playing, I'd have to pick up an official Sega backup cartridge. To my surprise, those cartridges are not cheap at all! I think I'd be better off picking up Hexen for the N64 + memory card for under $10.

Download the wad file and play it on PC instead. I suppose you're right. I was enjoying playing it on the Saturn, but the saving issue is really a downer. Does anyone know if other FPS have similar issues saving, too? Does Duke Nukem, Quake, and PowerSlave have enormous files that cannot be saved to the internal memory?

All the games you mentioned can be saved on the internal memory just fine. I've actually been wondering if I should get a backup cart for my Saturn because of Hexen. But I'm not sure if messing around with a backup cart and an Action Replay will wear out my cart slot.

Why is the Saturn's cartridge slot so sensitive to wear? Obviously, other cartridge systems that require constant swapping of cartridges must not be prone to this kind of behavior. I guess they assume you will leave whatever cartridge you have in the slot (memory, Action Replay, etc), and it will not be taken out very often.
On a slightly off topic note, are the "power memory" cartridges that are white and Japan based identical to the black, "backup" cartridges (in terms of size and functionality)? They seem to be a bit more affordable.

action replay carts have thicker PCBs because they are unofficial, and the thicker PCB wears out the springyness in the slot.

Actually most Action Replays (with the exception of the old black datel ones) have PCBs the same size, it's the CD+, GameSharks and other junk that has super wide PCBs.
Although ironically the earlier CD+ carts had a nice thin PCB, then the later ones had a mega thick ones!
The Saturns cart slot does have to share the blame though, it's not very well made and seriously prone to damage even with normal use of an official cart.

I've decided to leave my official memory cart permanently inside mine. I'll get a second Saturn someday for RAM cart shenanigans.
