Usually I just take some kitchen wipes and give them a good scrub but sometimes that isn't enough. I've saved some stuff from becoming landfill but they are really grotty. 1. I took apart a Mega Drive controller and gave it a good clean but I am having trouble putting it back together again! The d-pad contacts and button contacts are on opposite sides of the board and I can't seem to get the d-pad to feel right (it's very very stiff). At least the buttons feel great now so one out of two aint bad 2. Anything I should know before taking apart N64 controllers? One of them has got mud all over it so just a rub down won't do 3. A Virtua Gun was also among the stuff. Is the lens pretty sensitive? Or can I just take a bit of damp kitchen towel and give it a rub?

It's pretty easy to reassemble controllers. Just put the dpad/buttons into place in the front half of the casing first, then put on the contact pads on the dpad/buttons, then the board, then align the cord, then put the back half of the casing on. If it was that easy I wouldn't be asking This thing has me stumped. Instead of having all the contact pads on the same side, the d-pad contacts are on the other side of the board. It has a pole that sticks into the d-pad, goes through the board and on the other end it has a disc so when you move the d-pad, the disc moves too and presses against the pads. The design is really really dumb.

The design is why it works well...

The design is why it works well... Totally. The Megadrive D-Pad is one of the best.
