I never made the connection despite the icon vaguely looking like a fag *facepalm* for those americans who are not yet aware, in england a fag is more commonly used to refer to a cigarette, as the original term refers to something that they would use to burn people at the stake (and the american term comes from the fact that they would often chuck gay people into the flames at the bottom with the fags, not bothering to get them their own stake) ...or at least that's what i heard. and nintendo aren't so innocent ¬¬ ever heard of doki doki majo shinpan? a DS game in which you look at naked anime characters to see if they have the mark of a witch by rubbing them with the sylus!

I agree that it would have been odd for Sega to request any smoking references be removed from a Saturn conversion of Metal Gear Solid after the game had gone into production, so I'm guessing any changes were enforced during the planning stages. Again looking at the context of such a decision being made, you have to bear in mind that Sega was around this same period closing down its Deep Water label. In fact, a representative was quoted around this time as being disappointed because sales had dropped since the MegaCD became popular with older players - did anyone stop to think the problem may not have been with the quality of mature software, but more the fact your average consumer still felt burned by having to pay through the teeth for hardware failure after hardware failure bearing the Sega name? Anyway, let's not get too caught up in one particular and rather limited subject. Hopefully in the next few days I'll be able to provide that Cyber Sled picture I mentioned before, plus I should just quickly mention that I'm certainly going to be listing sources in my ongoing project whenever it's possible to do so...

I totally forgot to upload this earlier, but here's what is believed to be the sole genuine screenshot of Namco's cancelled Saturn port of CyberSled, as seen in various late '95 magazines: I seem to recall the original source of this being a preview tape shown at some Japanese trade event - at least one notable industry insider I know may still have a copy of this...

Ridge Racer was supposedly plagued by various technical problems, which Namco blamed on Sega's poor hardware documentation. CyberSled remains unreleased despite being finished - according to one source who names Climax as the company responsible for this particular effort, rather than Namco - and I don't recall Tekken ever getting mentioned as being Saturn-bound. My guess is that any further plans were put on hold by Sony offering contracts to ensure such high profile games remained PlayStation exclusives, with Soul Calibur only reaching the Dreamcast because of it being made clear serious lessons had been learned from mistakes made during the 32-bit era.
I seem to recall Namco's conversion team being unhappy with the PS edition of Ridge Racer as well, hence the release of Revolution so soon after followed by the later "hi-spec" upgraded edition (even though the latter was effectively a tech demo issued as a bonus disc with Type 4 in certain regions). Besides, by continuing to use PS-based arcade technology Namco obviously had no choice but to consider Sony's machine its lead platform throughout that particular console generation.
EDIT: Information regarding CyberSled on the Saturn changed due to new source providing key details.

It's hard to think that the time when logos like that being socially acceptable was only that long ago...

I understand this thread is over 3 years old now, sorry for the bump, but I thought I'd share some information here about the Metal Gear Solid on the Sega Saturn since the "issue" wasn't resolved I'll post what I know, and yes I did just create this account to post this.
Hideo Kojima mentioned in an interview on the summer of 1998 that he had started planning Metal Gear Solid (the one that would at the end come out for the PlayStation) in 1993 and the official development started in 1996.
On that interview he makes a reference that half the team was still working on Policenauts for the Sega Saturn when he said he wanted Metal Gear Solid to be in 3D and the idea was meet with great resistance, but when the official development of Metal Gear Solid started in 1996, Resident Evil had been released already and so the idea of a 3D Metal Gear Solid was better accepted since they had an idea of what was possible.
Now, how can this bring us to the conclusion of a possible existence of an early version of Metal Gear Solid for the Sega Saturn?
Between 1993 and 1996 Hideo Kojima was, as mentioned, planning Metal Gear Solid, on the interview he gave on the summer of 1998 Kojima mentioned the game had been delayed in Japan because the team had trouble transitioning from 2D to 3D. His response was a bit ambiguous, since he might be mentioning the transition from the "2D Sega Saturn Policenauts" to "3D PlayStation Metal Gear Solid", or a possibly early version of "2D Metal Gear Solid for the Sega Saturn" to a final 3D version on the PlayStation.
It's very plausible that between 1993 and 1996 Kojima did more than pen and paper work regarding the planning of Metal Gear Solid and it would make sense for the team to stick with what they know, specially when Kojima himself said they really didn't want to work with 3D and considering the fact that the early days of the PlayStation weren't brilliant.
You can easily find information about the slow start the PlayStation had and how little attention developers were giving to the PlayStation on the early days until, ironically, Sega released the Virtua Fighter arcade machine.
Also to note in an interview Hideo Kojima mentioned when he started he had a team of 10 people, and at the end they were already 30, but only 5 had game developing experience. To note here is the interview doesn't mention if by "starting" they were referring to 1993 or 1996. If in 1993 Hideo Kojima had a 10 member team all the way till the official start of development in 1996, then there's a good chance some early version of a Metal Gear Solid was being created on the Sega Saturn in 2D.
So 'Syntesis' disbelieve of having a high profile game in mid 1998 for the Sega Saturn might be well placed, since the plans to have it on the Sega Saturn, if there ever were any, would have been much older than that, back in 1993 and they were abandoned in favor of having the project reworked to be in 3D for the PlayStation.
