on a side note, doesn't the dreamcast play backups even without a mod chip? If it doesn't, I accidentally picked up a modded one... It does, provided you burn selfbooting images with padus discjuggler. There are limitations in 50/60hz though, and some last generation machines actually have the security problem fixed and will need modchips. Also, you still need some kind of modding for imports. You can burn the images with more than discjuggler now - I've used alcohol and by converting the image with cdi2nrg I used Nero and never had any problems. Even back then you could prep the images and burn it with command line tools if you knew what you were doing. Most of the images of the backups you can download are patched as well, I think, or at least I've never had a pal release that didn't work on my JP Dreamcast. But yeah, if you want to play import originals you'll need a mod chip. Also, I thought it was an old wives tale that the older generation machines couldn't play backups?

It's not, later generation japanese DCs have the Mil-cd bug patched, so they can't play backups. The ones from 2000-onwards.

Ah right, because I remember reading (this was way back in 2001 or so) that it was something to do with the lasers but the real reason they didn't play backups sounds like something completely different.
Is that patch unique to Japanese Dreamcasts or do the later US and EUR models have it as well?

The swap trick is really easy if you use the single-swap-method, it goes like this: 1. Cold boot with backup and wait until it's recognized as an audio CD. 2. Change disc to any original game, even out of region ones works, and press the reset button. 3. Wait for the disc to spin up after the "white flash" during the boot, now quickly stop it with you thumb and change disc to backup. It's called the single-swap-method as you only have to change discs while it's spinning once instead of 2-3 times with other methods. The first step can take ages for some games, but if you pad the backup with audio tracks so the disc is 60+ minutes it will just take a few seconds. If you're really worried about damaging the console you can always try to find a Magic Card www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_6a8wrku0o (turn off the sound before opening).

Alright, I'm sold. Does anyone know where I can buy the necessary modchip to do this?
And also, if I am to understand what you all are saying, it is possible for me to create backup of one of my games on my computer and it will be playable on my Saturn even without a modchip?

The self booting images being discussed are Dreamcast images. You'll need a modchip to play any backed up Saturn game.

The modchips sold at Racketboy are one-point solder I believe. Are Rob Webb's the same?

If you're into botching and have the right Saturn you can install robs chip with no soldering at all! Rob's chip is one point solder, the board itself is also of infinitely better quality, but as I've said previously the only problems I've had with either is snapping one of the racketboy chips on installation. Both work faultlessly for me.
