I just beat this game!!!!! I had the game of a lifetime and took all the bottom levels to progress. I made it to the very last level on 1cc I think. But the last boss is really cheap and I went through my remaining credits pretty fast.

Serious congratulations to you bradcap1 that's now 3 forums members that have managed to complete the game, so maybe it can be done. Did you switch out P1 to P2 once you drained all your P1 credits? If you did it on P1 credits alone then that is MEGA impressive. Well done either way

Had to switch to player 2 on the final boss to win unfortunately. I think I could have got it done with player 1 if only I had used the bombs non-stop. Tons of cheap deaths on the final boss and left a lot of bombs unused. It sucks because I was in a zone on the other bosses. You can definitely get to the final boss on one credit though.

I've credit fed my way through to the end of Darius Gaiden but with the auto-fire cheat activated (if that is a cheat - shmups.com forum accepts hi-scores that way)
As is always the case when I credit-fed - I felt pretty cheap. I credit feed occasionally and for certain games it's necessary in order to practice later levels but I still don't like doing it.

I used the Virtua Stick with auto-fire enabled. No cheat codes.

Here's a couple of pics I took on the final boss and after defeating him. Congrats dude. You probably can't remember but do you remember what route you took? As I'm gonna attempt to complete it tomorrow so I'm looking for the easiest route.

The course I took followed the bottom part of the map. Whatever you do, do not wind up in zone M. That whole level is a massive boss fight. A-C-F-J-O-U-V.

My post might have looked like a criticism of not 1CC ing a shmup - wasn't the intention...getting to the last boss on 1 credit is impressive.

Now you see its games like Darius Gaiden, Radiant Silvergun and Thunderforce V where I say "God bless the Cheat Codes on my AR4in1 Cart" Its sad to say but when it comes to Darius Gaiden, its neccessary to cheat otherwise its too damn hard. I always start the game with infinite powerups. I've been recently playing it, adamant I wasn't gonna cheat this time but I failed miserably. So this brings me to ask my SSF Members these two questions: Has anyone ever completed Darius Gaiden without cheat codes? Has anyone ever completed Darius Gaiden without switching to player 2 when out of player 1 credits? If you have, speak up! Because I'm seriously convinced its next to impossible. Still a fab game though. RSG is difficult because it is highly claustrophobic and extremely long. And that is if you play it from a previous save game - if you play it from a new game, it is even worse because then you HAVE to kill all enemies in a set order, or else you get no scores to level up your guns, and the last boss becomes impossible to kill (other than the time out method). Thunder Force V is very easy - as long as you don't lose any of your extra weapons (Free Range and Hunter can decimate anything the game throws at you, before they can get a shot off). It makes it more fun too, since the stakes are much higher, when you have no shields and use an extra weapon: you can only lose them if you get shot down when using one. Now if you wanted to do a, say, Vulcan only playthrough, then the game would be extremely difficult. But you are not limited to that any more than you are limited to beat Street Fighter using only the medium punch. Only difficult part in the game is the last boss really, which has a few patterns that cannot be dodged, plus you face her after another end-of-level boss which can already drain your shield/weapons if you play badly. Oh, and if you face the last boss with insufficient weaponry (such as no craws), you'll be incapable of putting off enough harm to defeat her. She'll just bugger off and you get the bad ending. And on that note, if you have to continue on the last level, you simply won't be able to gather enough weapons to do proper damage either. Darius Gaiden has a few levels which are significantly more difficult than others, so you just have to find whichever path is the easiest for you. More paths also means you have more bosses, so if you can't beat a boss, pick another path. You also have 7 different final bosses, some very hard, some quite easy. I can beat almost all the normal bosses easily, though I may need to use a bomb or two on some of them. For the final bosses, against Odious Trident and Storm Causer, I have to feed bombs or my remaining lives throughout the fight; against Vermillion Coronatus and Great Thing I need to use bombs to dodge many of their moves, and against Curious Chandelier, Risk Storage and Hysteric Empress (and Titanic Lance) I only need to use bombs if I'm doing badly or panic. And yeah, Darius Gaiden is infamous for allowing you to shoot faster than what the normal rapidfire allows for. So if you use an auto fire controller (like the Virtua Stick) or if you use the built-in rapidfire cheat (on main menu hold B, press Y, Right, Left, X, Z, L, R - I think), you'll be able to shoot much faster and do significantly more damage against bosses. Now some people say this is a cheat and it is an unfair thing, but I simply consider it something that makes the game more comfy and fun. Without the rapidfire cheat you can still just button mash: it is not that difficult either since you have TWO shoot buttons on the Saturn. But if I play normally, I'll end up mashing constantly, and that hurts my hand, so I just use the rapidfire cheat. More importantly, using the cheat makes the weapon balance significantly different, which requires you to rethink your strategy. Some weapons have a limit on how many shots can appear on the screen, so the only way to get more damage from them is to move as close to the enemy as you can, which can be dangerous. Additionally some of the later guns actually become weaker because of that, and most weapons also have different properties. The triple Vulcan from point blank is the strongest weapon but it can't hit many enemies since it doesn't hit over walls. The triple and quadriple laser have a very low fire rate unless you move up close. The wide wave + double Vulcan is stronger than the wide wave + double mini wave gun, since it'll shoot as fast as the double Vulcan expires on the screen. This makes the last gun upgrade actually a downgrade, which is why on many 1cc gameplay you have players actively dodging powerups. If you have a wide wave + double Vulcan, and use the rapid fire, then you can beat Titanic Lance without it being able to shoot back once. But it does not help that much against bosses with nastier patters, or ones that have limited weak points or limited amount of time on when they expose those weak points (which is basically every last boss in the game). tl:dr; the rapid fire cheat significantly alters game balance and gives you a different risk-reward system, so I wouldn't consider it a "cheat". With that said I can 1cc the game without it, but I don't bother most of the time because then I end up mashing the fire button which hurts my hand. And you can still enable autofire and kick up the difficulty to hardest, or the cheat only absurd (or was it mania?) mode.

I had no idea that an auto fire pad was faster than the games rapidfire. Anyway after a few attempts following bradcap1 level route and first time using this rapud fire cheat i managed to get to the final V zone. I died within minutes though as I had no credits left but its still further than I'd ever gotten before. Even though its not Shinobi X or RSG level of hardness, I'm still doubtful I'll ever complete the game without AR Cheats but an improvement nonetheless.

Instead of using the routes that other people say, try coming up with whichever route works the best for you. The boss in Zone V (Risk Storage) is fairly easy by the way, and the only difficult part of the actual level are those little orbs that roll around the ground and ceiling.
On another note, I've since managed to beat the final boss of Thunder Force V from a continue on the last level (where you get base weaponry and no CRAWs, except for the ones the game drops during the fight). It's very tight though, and you have to concentrate on destroying the big bugs lightning sword with your over weapon. Doing so releases 3 additional CRAWs, allowing you to keep using the over weapon for much longer. If you can't destroy the sword, then at that point she goes berserk and starts swinging it around doing full-screen coverage, so you probably end up losing your lives before the fight times out.
