I've been playing a ton of JP shmups lately but decided to put in one of my first pickups when I got back into my Saturn: Darius Gaiden (US). I was never real good at this game but I could make it to the last or next to last level using all credits and then playing as player 2 and continuing using all of those credits. Playing all the JP shmups have made me a better shmup gamer I think. This time after not playing this title in about a year I got to the last level using only the three credits of player 1. And I have to say, what a kick ass game! This game doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Probably because its not an exotic title as its easily available and very cheap to acquire. If you don"t have this game, get it as its too cheap to not be in your collection.

Infuriating that it doesn't save your high scores. Wonderful game though - got a copy of this when I first got a Saturn. Have a Japanese copy too now.

Probably not the best place to post this, but I prefer G-Darius

Probably not the best place to post this, but I prefer G-Darius HEH, YEAH... I'm also in the G-Darius crowd I'm afraid. I've played a fair bit of Darius 2, Darius Gaiden and G-Darius in my time, and whilst I wholeheartedly agree that Gaiden is a fantastic game, I prefer GDarius myself. As for the best in the series? I'm not sure which this will be now since the release of Burst (PSP) and Burst: Another Chronicle (4P!) at the arcade!

This is a good game, but I get very frustrated playing it. If I lose a life in the first level or do bad, I hit restart because if I lose my power ups I'm useless

I was never real good at this game but I could make it to the last or next to last level using all credits and then playing as player 2 and continuing using all of those credits. Playing all the JP shmups have made me a better shmup gamer I think. This time after not playing this title in about a year I got to the last level using only the three credits of player 1. Now you see its games like Darius Gaiden, Radiant Silvergun and Thunderforce V where I say "God bless the Cheat Codes on my AR4in1 Cart" Its sad to say but when it comes to Darius Gaiden, its neccessary to cheat otherwise its too damn hard. I always start the game with infinite powerups. I've been recently playing it, adamant I wasn't gonna cheat this time but I failed miserably. So this brings me to ask my SSF Members these two questions: Has anyone ever completed Darius Gaiden without cheat codes? Has anyone ever completed Darius Gaiden without switching to player 2 when out of player 1 credits? If you have, speak up! Because I'm seriously convinced its next to impossible. Still a fab game though.

If anyone comes in here and says that have, they are lying! I find this game hard also.
(I'm sure there are some great SHMUP players out there that could do it)

Okay, yes, it's hard as brass balls, but Gaiden is a gem in my small collection. As for me, I can get through about four levels before I crash and burn, and I'm VERY proud of that!
In general, arcade shmups is one of my favorite genres of all time, and Gaiden is a great one. I've always said, that the audiovisual experience of arcade games, is part of what makes them work, and that game looks and sounds amazing. To me, it can be frustrating, because in addition to the patterns that you have to memorize (as if that wasn't hard enough), there are enemies that will straight-up chase you, regardless of where you are, onscreen. It's to the point where, if you don't have a black hole bomb, or whatever that thing is, you're gonna lose a life and that's all there is to it.
I do have a 4-in-1 cart, so I probably will cheat one of these days, just to see the rest of the game. To date though, I've just picked it up now and again, and wept at the difficulty. It's hard, but it's still fun.

Cheating is the only way to go with Darius. Its funny cus I actually appreciate the game more since using the cheat codes. I've completed it 3 times now. The satisfaction of starting the game on very hard is overflowing.

Gotta agree, a phenomenal shoot-em-up. The Darius series has always had an outstanding atmosphere and constant display of creativity- Gaiden is a prime example, pair that with the OST provided by the masterful Taito in-house band Zuntata (who's music was always avant grade for the time) and you can't go wrong with it
Gotta admit since I only ever played it on Taito Legends in my youth I always had to cheat with infinite credits, for everyone who's completed it, you all deserve medals xD
