They are actually pretty simple to instal depending on which saturn revision you have! either way don't be scared mate! the cost of modchip installation is more then that of a replacement saturn unit!

I wanted a PSOne chip. Not a Saturn since I have SEGA DEV Boot Discs for it. How it's it a funny mod anyway? It opens up an entire catalogue of games for you where you can enjoy playing games and not pay stupid prices for some twat to line his pockets while the original company loses no money from them anyway.

So you want to install the Emotion Engine from the PS2 in your Saturn? That's the only Moodchip I know of.

I like my games running on the Happy Firmware. Latest version update kinda depressed me a bit though...
On a serious note, modchips are as easy to install as opening the Saturn. With the right setup, you won't even touch solder! (Or if you do, it'll be on one spot that has plenty of room for error)

i could for sure do with some happy firmware ! So I might be brave and try and install the modchip.. seems I can get one for £15 in the UK so with an action replay too will be able to play all games, all backups from all regions for say 40 quid which is a fair price. I read somewhere that modchips work best with units with serial numbers 169 onwards? My serial starts with 167, not sure what version that makes mine, just know its a V2. Still if anyone in east midlands fancys installing the chip for me theres a create of beer in it for you. I know its an easy mod, I just know it won't be for me !! Heres the instructions I need to follow .. www.robwebb1.plus.com/saturn/saturnchipguide_2.htm

Serials starting with 169... are 1996 made VA9 models. Modchips work best with VA2 and above, which all use 21pin cdrom connectors. VA0 and VA1 use 20-pin connector.
Inbetween 21pin models, there are 3 different CDRom boards which need different settings on the modchip, they are distinguished by whats on the cdrom board: - 64pin controller IC (VA2 to VA5) - 32pin controller IC (VA6 to VA9) - 32pin controller IC, no oscillator (VA10 to VA15)
Not sure which one is easier to install, since the modchips I have were all literally plug and play on both my va5 and va9 saturn (PAL) saturns. I don't have a va10+ model.
edit: you can get the motherboard revision of your saturn by checking the 7th number from the right in the serial.
