I've never played the Saturn version, but remember playing the arcade version and being blown away with the graphics while having no problems with the gameplay.
Arcade
Saturn
1.Why were the Saturn's graphics so poor? The fighters look blocky and faded, half the animations were removed and even the classy looking HUD was replaced with something that looked like a child's MS Paint effort!
2.Why, 17 years on, do 3D fighting games still not look as realistic as 2D digitized games like SFM and Mortal Kombat 3?

Playing the Saturn version of this is about as satisfying as having a tramp take a shit in your coat.
But different strokes for different folks I suppose.

THE ARCADE VERSION... is actually a pretty cool game. Highly playable, combo crazy and pretty well polished for a digitised fighter (i have a weakness for digitisation I'm afraid ) 1) Both the Saturn & PS1 versions of this game were pretty much dogsh*t. I've also queried this very same issue and wondered why the game couldn't have been ported perfectly, on the Saturn at the very least (+4MB). The game would STILL have received negative press, however, at least it would have been pretty good/fun! 2) I still burn a candle for digitised games I'm afraid. I love it when modern titles still elect to use actual PPL/actors for in game footage (i.e. C&C series). However, I'm also super guilty of loving the super sh*tty, badly acted FMV sequences of the early 90's 32-bit games too. Sometimes holds up better than early CG vids imo (i.e. Fighters Megamix intro etc) if done 'well'. As for digitised fightes looking MORE realistic than 3D fighters? I agree. They definitely do, and, imo, there is one main reason for this. Aside the characters ACTUALLY being people(!), all the moves and kicks are properly performed in realtime and then added as frames into the game. The actors are ACTUALLY doing the moves (in MK series especially). As cool as Law appears in Tekken or Lion moves in VF, the way the fighters move STILL looks less realistic in the associated 3D fighters. Even more hilarious, is the realistically touted UFC titles look like shit when the fighters actually kick or punch. There's ZERO feeling of power in delivery or impact. Not many moves beat the feeling and feedback of a B+HK 'roundhouse' in any original MK title tbh EDIT: Incidentally, seeing that combo that Guile/Van Damme launches into at 1:48 in the ARC video, is the most van damme-tastic thing I have seen in some time! With the legendary split as the finisher no less

The Saturn version seems completely different to the arcade original though, half the animation frames are missing and it seems really unresponsive. Did Tantulus port it or something?

HAHAHA... ;D No, it IS very different (I wouldn't say completely, but get what you mean ) but I was simply suggesting that I don't know why the Saturn, in particular, didn't get a near perfect port of the Arcade version using the 4MB RAM expansion - instead of the 'version' it actually received. Perhaps, it was designed on PS1 first as lead platform at the time? It's wholly possible. To be honest, judging by the level of detail and crazy amounts of digitised frames in the Arcade version, perhaps... PERHAPS even the Saturn may have struggled to run it. Giggle at the nature of the content all 'you' want, the game looks silky smooth and fairly high-end imo. I wonder what Arcade Board ran it? CPS2 presumably, but I can't be too sure...

The only fighting games that come close to looking as realistic are UFC and Fight Night. All the other developers seem to be in a phase of making their characters look like they're on steroids, just compare SF2 to SF4, or MK3 to MK2011.
I'd love to see what could be done with digitization and FMV on modern consoles, those types of games really weren't given a chance and I'm sure they don't always have to be like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.

I'd LOVE to produce an HD FMV adventure game, just to see how it sells! I seem to be one of the very few people that enjoy FMV games.

While I don't want developers to all start trying to make ultra-realistic looking games, I wish those that do would find better ways of making character models/faces.
The latest Unreal Engine demo looks gorgeous, but the character's face looks too uncanny-valley.
