So I've been meaning to get this for a while and I just did a check on ebay to see what it cost. When the hell did this become an expensive US Saturn game? I swear I just checked the prices on it less than a month or so ago and it was in the $15 range like Sega Rally. Now there's only a handful of copies and they are all in the $60 range. Even the Japanese version is in the $35-$40 range. The PAL version appears to be unaffected for now though.
I know two of the listings are sealed so that makes some sense I guess but seriously, what the hell is going on here? Did someone buy them all up to make a monopoly or something?

I know two of the listings are sealed so that makes some sense I guess but seriously, what the hell is going on here? Did someone buy them all up to make a monopoly or something? DUUUUDE... you know how this works. One guy lists STCC on eBay for $60 and then, clueless others who have no idea or concept of value of their (son's, or their own old) games see's the title listed @$60 and simply follow suit. Sometime soon, someone who knows what it's actually worth will list one at a normal price (whilst laughing at the other listings!). There really should be some kind of official video game valuing authority/council out there somewhere who maintain factual based market valuing based on rarity and condition. All this high value shit just ruins the hobby imo... and I own a lot of high value shit, so it's not really in my interest to suggest such a thing... but I just want gamers and genuine enthusiasts to be interested in retro gaming as opposed to freeloaders and sharks getting in on it. Some guy recently on NG.COM was trying to sell a US Matrimelee for $1k... when less than a year ago it was around $300 new from the sites own store. I called him out on it and he wasn't happy, but to me, it's not far off trying to scam newcomers to the hobby imo. One moronic 'whats cool right now?' hobbyist turns up with more salary than braincells and drops a needless $1k on that Matrimelee, sets a new false value benchmark for a title still only worth HALF the new 'supposed' value. And all the other 'Swedishes' will suddenly come out of the woodwork with all their copies too Sorry for the rant, but after Blazing Star on AES doubled in value over a twelve month period, I've since figured anything can happen, left in the wrong hands. I mean, seriously, I'd love to 'see' how that went from a consistently £600 title to a £1200 title... just like that!

I know, it's just stupidly frustrating. Especially on extremely common games. Looking more closely it looks like some guy threw a sealed copy up a month ago and the final bid was $5. That same guy now has another sealed copy up for a BIN price of $60. I'm guessing he's pissed he didn't get more for his sealed game and is now trying to manipulate the market. This has literally came out of no where as you can see here: videogames.pricecharting.com/game/sega-saturn/sega-touring-car-championship

NEVER EVEN HEARD... of Half.Com til you supplied that statistical link. Is that a big company in the U.S., or is it fairly new/unknown there too?

It's not new, it's just a side company of ebay where things are typically cheaper. The downside however is you have no pictures or auctions. It's all BIN and you have to take the sellers word for it for the most part.

I know this sounds dodgy but I just wait til someone from the UK or here in Australia sells a US copy for a reasonable price. It happens every now and again but you're right - $60 is outrageous. Are you after a US copy specifically? You can pick up a PAL copy in good condition for like £10 from the UK which is about $15USD. I'd still reconsidering paying that much, though. It's a disappointingly crap game.

The biggest problem are ebay shop owners who list stuff 24/7 365 days of the year with no real listing fee's at stupid prices knowing they will never sell just to boost the price up over all in the market. What comes around goes around and they never sell. As Neo said, as soon as Joe Blogs list one at the real price it will be that one that sells.
On a brighter note if you put enough time into it it's not that bad, it has aged better than the first time you played it all them years back if you have the patience for it. No means a classic tho when it comes to Saturn Driving games.
£20 tops for an utter mint condition one, and even then you'd have to think twice about it. Is it worth that much to you because ultimately no matter how much you like it will become a dust collector soon enough compared to many more worthy games that need playing.

Retro game's prices seem to consistently rising for some time, I too wonder whether it'll stop or just continue indefinitely. And the more obscure system the worse it gets, hence why Saturn stuff gets more and more expensive.
I remember when 4 years ago I rediscovered Saturn and used to look up ebay all the time for prices. When I compared what I saw then and mere 2 years later I was pretty shocked. One example - Night Warriors Darkstalkers (PAL), in 2008 I saw it frequently and the price was usually around 5-10 quids, no more than that, it was one of the more affordable games, and certainly one of the cheaper 2D fighters. Fast forward and now apparently it's worth... 25 pounds? And that's if you're lucky... I don't check it that often, perhaps I missed some auctions where it was cheaper, but from what I see everytime is that it more than doubled in worth. Same goes for many other games, with emphasis on those less common. Not to mention the rare ones, their prices got even more ridiculous - PAL Deep Fear used to go for around 30-40 quid, now it goes for no lower than 80...
At least most of you guys have a chance to find some games in some local game stores, my only choice is finding stuff online, absolutely no retro games present in my vicinity and pretty much in the entire country, except for a few obscure stores with little amount of retro stuff anyway.

I'd honestly prefer the US version but I might pick up the Japanese version if the price doesn't come down. My Saturn can't play PAL games.

Just keep an eye out for your own region, no real rush and one will show up at the right price. I know not having it right now is the painful part but it's not a must have at all costs which you understand of course. Be patient and you will be rewarded! Fingers crossed for you.

I'm in no rush, I just was completely surprised by the ebay stupidity of the price.
