I always thought a proper challenge is one of the most essential aspects of a game, without which it can become boring quite fast (that's how I felt about PDS unfortunately). So which Saturn games are, in your opinion, most difficult to complete? Which one made you feel like you've actually accomplished something after beating it?
Among the games I played on my Saturn so far, I'd number Gradius II, Salamander and Guardian Heroes. Gradius II I've only completed once, on easiest difficulty, same goes with Salamander, which is a real bitch as it doesn't allow any continues or extra lives (though you can set them up to 7 in options). During the first week of me playing it, it took me like 60 tries or more and I just couldn't make it. That was when I still tried to do it on default settings. After that I decided on my approach towards shmups - now I always start on the lowest difficulty and work my way up the ladder. With Gradius games even the easiest setting is no cake walk.
Guardian Heroes was more managable but it still took my lots of tries to actually beat it, never attempted to finish it without continuing though, that sounds like a completely different story.

I've not played a huge amount of Saturn games so its probably not the most challenging but I thought the original Wipeout was pretty tricky to get the hang on. I'm sure I completed it back in the day but now I can only get about 4 tracks in before getting stuck!

HARDCORE 4X4... because I can only tolerate that w4nk framerate for so long before wanting to jam a f*cking biro into my eyesocket.
For me, this is the ultimate challenge ;D
ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE... I have found that XMEN COTA can be a bit brutal on the default difficulty. Magneto... although I now know how to deal with him, used to give me some serious issues too. A proper SNK style boss, right there...

King of Fighters '95 kicks my ass even on the easiest baby level. Also @ NeoGeoNinja - that's spot on regarding 4x4 I finished it back in the 90's, but couldn't even complete a lap recently when I booted it up. Finally, try Tunnel B1 and see how you get on. I don't know anyone who's gotten past the first two or three levels.

Try playing Trash It and experience the challenge of trying to work out just what the absolute fuck you're meant to do in the game.

Putting aside those games which are insanely difficult due to poor controls, glitches, and/or disproportionately long stretches with no save point... The Horde. You start with very little to work with, and even if it weren't for the titular enemies, this would not be an easy simulation game. As it is, just keeping over half your properties from being gobbled up in a single season can leave you in a pool of your own sweat. For a while you can't spare cash on defenses, so you're left with Chauncey to fend them off, and drawing a balance between slashing through hordlings as quick as you can and not making Chauncey go dizzy from overexertion is tough. To top it off, your earnings are cumulative, which means it's hard to tell if you're doing well enough to make it through the game. I have yet to make it past the second area. Crystal Dynamics games are very challenging as a rule, but for me that's the toughest. Honorable mentions: The Legend of Oasis/Story of Thor 2, Pandemonium!, Blue Seed

Daytona USA, (1995) & Sega Rally are never ending. Your never reach your true potential of what can be done. Having said that, Exhumed/Power Slave sticks out the most for me as it was just awesome end to finish and even when Sega Saturn Mag printed all the developer doll locations that was another adventure in it's self! Working out how to get the last doll on the under side of the final boss platform being the last one you needed was when that sense of achievement really hit home.

I played Darius II last night and it is certainly challenging. I've been playing a lot of shmups over the last year and have to say that the curve on this game is pretty steep. The first level is easy enough but so far the second levels are impossible for me. The combination of a tight path to fly through, enemies, enemy fire, and, shit popping out of the ceiling and floor have kept me from getting through it thus far.

I second Tunnel B1. It'd really be interesting for me to see the rest of the game. I bet it just stops after the 3rd level. why even bother making the rest of it?

I was grief stricken for days after the play off final. The 'Pool had enough chances to win ten games that day. As for most challenging game I would have to say I'm with MIK on those choices!
