My Saturn has been modded so now it can run games in 60Hz too. I tested all my imports and some PAL games that apparently are considered as unoptimized. And while Daytona USA is clearly not running at full screen it does work full speed (tested with a stopwatch), same with Sega Ages Vol. 1. The list on our site marks which PAL games are optimized, but only those that run in both full screen and full speed.
Is there any list that details to what extend PAL games are actually optimized?

Daytona USA 1995 (PAL) has been optimized some what to run on PAL. It runs too fast at 60hz and you can feel it does if you know the game better. Tho to see this if your not sure you only need to get first place on any course and your see the end demo & credits photo will end cutting the music off before it's even finished. Screen is out of sync with the music timings. Screen will stretch a little @ 60hz but not much as it never used the whole screen in the first place any region, used 14:9 on a widescreen TV to enlarge the picture. Sega Touring Cars (PAL) will NOT display on a 60hz PAL Saturn properly. The screen screws up. Officially has been optimized lol, but yeah one of the rare one that will not display correct @ 60hz. Not that fussed what does and what does not to be honest. If your using NTSC discs than 60hz all the way. Something like Hexen (PAL) will love you for 60hz mode mind. I think there is some sort of list about, not sure where. As for it being 100% correct, I doubt it but I'm sure it will cover those need to know where it counts titles.

I didn't think Sega Ages was speed adjusted - there is by all accounts an issue with the timer in Outrun because it wasn't adjusted for 50Hz for example - making the game harder.
Think Baku Baku and Puzzle Fighter got good PAL treatments, as did the big first party releases such as VF2.
Stuff developed by UK devs probably got a optimised PAL version too - Wipeout/Wipeout2097 and Worms would be examples?

Yes, the clock in Outrun runs too fast, but the game itself is full-speed., that's why I set the timer difficulty to easy.

yeah - I guess that makes sense - if they speed adjusted the game then it would run too fast....guess they forgot to NOT adjust the speed of the clock. It's a pity the borders are so big though as Sega Ages is a really nice job otherwise.

Think Athlete Kings got PAL optimised too - have JPN and PAL versions and they at least feel like they run at the same speed (nothing scientific!) even though the PAL version has borders.

I'm pretty sure Puzzle Fighter wasn't PAL optimised. Like all of Capcom's other Saturn games, they all had big borders and ran at 50Hz.

I had the PAL Keio Flying Squadron 2 and I'm pretty sure it was optimized for 60hz

This is nothing to do with the Saturn but the worst thing I saw back on the day was Street Fighter 2 in the Super Nintendo PAL it was slow as fuck and the boarders were double as bad as the Japanese version had them too

Puzzle Fighter was an odd case, they ran the game in PAL resolution, but they merely centered the screen around the extra borders (unoptimized games merely run in their NTSC resolution with the borders automatically generated). The result is that the game hard borders in PAL mode and the screen got cut off if you used a 60hz switch on your machine.
3D Lemmings - full screen. AMOK - not full screen. Andretti Racing was... running in PAL resolution but not full screen. Like Puzzle Fighters, apparently. Area 51 - not full screen. Atlantis The Lost Tales - not full screen Baku Baku Animal filled the borders with static backgrounds, so it was full screen. Battle Stations - not full screen. Black Fire - not full screen. Blam Machinehead - not full screen. Blast Chamber - not full screen. Blazing Dragons - this piece of shit had borders even in NTSC machines!! Bootleg Sampler demo disc - this was a straight US disc pulled over, so nothing was in full screen. The VF2 demo however specifically mentions that it's NTSC code, and that the final version will be full screen full speed. Bubble Bobble feat. Rainbow Islands - not full screen Bug - not full screen. Bust-a-move 2 - not full screen. Casper - oddly enough, full screen. Shows more of the game area. Chaos Control - not full screen. Crime Wave - not full screen. Crusader No Remorse - not full screen. Cyberia - not full screen. D - not full screen. Darius II - not full screen. Darius Gaiden - not full screen. Dark Savior - not full screen. Darklight Conflict - full screen. Daytona USA - not full screen. Daytona CCE - full screen, I think. Deep Fear - runs in PAL resolution, but it still has borders. Destruction Derby - not full screen. Die Hard Arcade - full screen. Digital Pinball - not full screen. Discworld II - not full screen. Duke Nukem 3d - full screen, except cutscenes and Death Tank. Enemy Zero - not full screen. Exhumed - not full screen. F1 Challenge - not full screen. Formula Karts Special Edition - full screen. this title pushed the hardware a bit, as I recall. Frankenstein - not full screen. Galactic Attack - not full screen. Golden Axe The Duel - full screen. Gremlin Demo Disc - Reloaded was not fullscreen, menus weren't either, dunno about the other games on it. Grid Run - full screen. Hang-on GP - not full screen. Heberekke's Poppoito - not full screen. Hexen - not full screen. In The Hunt - not full screen. Ironman X-O Manowar - not full screen. Last Bronx - full screen. Loaded - not full screen. Lost Vikings 2 - not full screen. Magic Carpet - not full screen. Manx TT Superbike - not full screen. Marvel Super Heroes - not full screen. Mortal Kombat II - not full screen. Mortal Kombat Trilogy - not full screen. NBA JAM TE - not full screen. Nights - not full screen. Pandemonium - not full screen. Panzer Dragoon - not full screen (I think). Panzer Dragoon Saga - not full screen. Panzer Dragoon Zwei - full screen. Parodius - not full screen. Photo CD Operating system - not full screen, oddly enough. Pro Pinball The Web - not full screen. Riven - not full screen. Saturn Bomberman - not full screen. Saturn Power No.1 (core demo disc) - Fighting Force demo is not full screen, dunno about the others. Sega Ages vol.1 - none of the games are full screen. Sega Rally - full screen Sega Touring Car - full screen Sega Worldwide Soccer 98 - full screen Shining the Holy Ark - not full screen Shinobi X - not full screen Sim City 2000 - full screen Sonic 3D - not full screen Sonic R - not full screen Sonic Xtreme 718 prototype - surprisingly enough: full screen. STI knew how to code. Space Hulk - not full screen. Space Jam - not full screen. Steep Slope Sliders - not full screen. Street Racer - full screen. The Crow - not full screen. The Lost World Jurassic Park - not full screen. The Story of Thor 2 - full screen True Pinball - full screen Tunnel B1 - not full screen Virtua Fighter CG Portrait Collection - full screen Virtua Fighter Kids - full screen Virtua Fighter Remix - full screen Virtua Racing - not full screen Virtual Golf - not full screen Virtual-On Cyber Troopers - full screen Wipeout 2097 - not full screen World League Soccer 98 - full screen X-Men COTA - not full screen
I can't comment on any speed optimizations however. Other than Marvel Super Heroes and X-men COTA, both which were EXTREMELY slow.
Also, most 3d fighters ran full screen, except I think Toshinden Remix and maybe the first Virtua Fighter.

I'm pretty sure Puzzle Fighter wasn't PAL optimised. Like all of Capcom's other Saturn games, they all had big borders and ran at 50Hz. All I know is that the PAL version overscans at 60Hz which can be rectified because the game has a very good screen adjust option so it can be moved up. It plays OK once you do that but I assumed there was some PAL optimisation due to it overscanning at 60Hz. It being a puzzle game means that speed isn't really an issue but no idea of any speed optimisation. EDIT : just read the above post by zyrobs - interesting.

Apologies for reviving and oder thread but does anyone know whether the PAL version of Die Hard Trilogy would work on an NTSC Saturn console?
