It didn't have lightgun support on any home release did it?
Either way as has been said the game is dogshit, lightgun or no.

Nope. No light gun support in the Japanese version. Not that it really matters, as this has got to be one of the worst shooting games available for the system - Even Death Crimson (regularly voted the worst Saturn game ever) has light gun support!! I guess Acclaim figured that anyone who had one would spend most of the game trying to shoot themselves instead of actually playing it anyway!!

Here's a revelation for you all: from what I'm told, Revolution X was never a true light gun game. Apparently, though the arcade version has "guns", they're actually just joysticks used to position a cursor. I can't confirm this myself; I saw a Revolution X cabinet in a mini arcade just a few months ago, but didn't have any quarters to give it a try. However... I did notice that the guns are mounted on the cabinet, rather than resting in holsters as in every other arcade light gun game I've ever seen. Which certainly lends credence to the joystick-gun story, as does the fact that none of the other home versions have light gun support either. So assuming this is true, then yes, it is a garbage game, but you can't really say that they nerfed the Saturn version in particular.

Terminator 2 was like that too, or at least the one I used to play was. I'd never heard about that joystick thing, although I don't recall if I ever even played Revolution X before. That sounds pretty damn crazy.

Certainly does make sense.
But it's like creating a FIFA game without a ball

Alien Extinction quite a bit in my local arcade: As you can see, this too used mounted guns. So, I believe that there is no doubt truth in what Martiniii is saying here. I'm just trying to work out how it works. Obviously, forward and back to look up and down are pretty self explanatory, but what about when you turn the gun, or move diagonally? I say this as (obviously) a joystick only moves U, D, L, R with the associated diagonal (double) inputs inbetween. Incidentally, I love mounted gun games - especially this one ^ and Space Gun! (p.s. that linked picture is of a 50" cabinet!!!)

However, I wasn't aware that Revolution X used this same mechanic. I guess if I'd have thought about it though, I would have made the connection, as both of the Terminator games (which were also produced by Midway) have mounted guns too. Of course none of this excuses the abysmal gameplay of the actual game in question though, just the failure to offer light gun support in subsequent conversions, as it obviously wasn't present in the original code. I USED TO PLAY... Alien Extinction quite a bit in my local arcade: Holy Crap!! That looks fabulous and I didn't even know it existed!! The only Aliens game I've ever managed to find in an arcade was the Konami one (something that got regular play in my local arcade back in the day). Cheers for the heads up!! ;D

Looks great but isn't, still worth a few coins though. Not as awful as the newer Terminator arcade shooter. I'd assume there was a dial in there too, you know, like Tempest kinda thing. As long as you always know where the gun is in relation to the screen you can calibrate things accordingly. As others have said T2 Arcade game uses this kind of setup too. It's a great way to add lightgun support back to arcade games, not so great for the home where people are less willing to have a gun permanently fixed to the floor
