Another question would be: What do you guys think the average lifespan of a Saturn is? Love to hear from some of you vets who've had the console since the beginning.

I'VE BEEN THROUGH... countless PAL units I'm afraid, units that could have probably been remedied and repaired, had I have had the knowledge I have now. My original White JP model 2 is still kicking hard and strong though - and I use that for ALL my regional Saturn play (PAL & NTSC-J).

Interesting. I honestly believe the build quality of this system, especially for it being laser based, is extremely high. Which is good for all of us. The model which was given to me by a friend two years ago, has a build date of may 1996 and it is still going strong. *knock on wood* I have a nearly pristine Model 1 CIB that I have stored away on a shelf. I only opened it to check and see if it worked and it worked fantastic.

I still have my original PAL model 1 system ghstzch. I have cleaned its internal workings occasionally though, along with the CD lens - but so far it's holding out just fine. I also had it speed/region modded a good few years ago, with no noticeable detriment to the system. Now I may have been extremely lucky regarding my system, but I'm sure that I've played it for thousands of hours over the years and it's still working fine. Also, bear in mind the fact that I have had several original PlayStation's and a couple of PS2's die on me during this time. Never-the-less, just from some of the posts in the past on these fine forums, I know that not everyone has had such an easy time of things.

I've had my Saturn console since release, although I'm not playing on it everyday, infact not alot atall recently, it's not gave any problems to me yet. But even if it does pack up anytime soon I've got a few spare Saturn consoles hanging around

I still have the same Saturn, which is good because they seem kinda expensive. The only problem I have is that it always wants me to set the time when I turn it on, even though I replaced the battery. I haven't looked into it any more than that, and as long as it still plays games (it does) that's good enough for me.

Yeah they are unfortunately getting very expensive. I am hoping that when the day comes the laser goes or whatever that I can replace it to make it good as new.

Never had a Saturn die and still have my PAL Model 1 and PAL Model 2, the later I soon got switched back in the commercial days. I have never ever played back-up games, only originals. Always displayed it via RGB, official pads and memory carts. Done me proud. I've had one pad mess up, (Cable stretched my fault) & memory carts corrupt a couple of times over the years but fine after a format. Fingers crossed and touch wood and all my gear has been fine. Oh... and a good number of battery changes between the 2 machines lol. Maybe it's harder for second hand owners as you don't know the history of the machine even if you personally take care of it there after. All you can do is grab a couple of spares and I'm sure your find a good and a very little used one. Some people in their 50s, or 60's today you may find never used them much... I mean I picked up a MK2 MegaDrive from an older chap than me and the machine was mint, played a handful of times lol. I'm sure there are still some under used Saturn's out there that would of been very little used because a more mature person bought it. That's the best you can hope for.

Got an NTSC-U Model 1 that died in the span of a few days. Got an NTSC-U Model 2 shortly after and it's lasted for at least a decade now, no hiccups, still loads games perfectly (and I'm sure that I didn't treat it perfectly as a kid either. )

I still have my original Model 2 from 1996. It still works perfectly as far as I can tell.

Had to replace my original Model 1 in around '99 as it developed a buzzing from the power supply that also caused the picture to flicker.
The only other Saturns I've had any issues with have been well used ones that more than likely haven't been looked after too well.

Mine was made in 1996 and it died this year, I replaced the laser and now its working great. Hopefully it will last another 15 years.. How long is the drive motor expected to last? I know the motors last longer than the lasers, I've seen CD players from the 80s that still work after replacing the laser.

With a new laser? Or one scrapped from another machine?
