So my girlfriend told me the other day she'd never played Bubble Bobble, obviously this is unacceptable. To rectify this situation, I have access to three versions:-
1) Mame - Should be fairly accurate, but not played with Mame in a month or two. 2) Xbox 360 version - Have played this some, seems ok 3) Saturn version - I've not really played this much, but I love the Saturn version of Rainbow Islands. How does Bubble Bobble compare, is it fairly arcade perfect or what? Any major differences from the coin-op? Any enhancements?

Don't know about the Saturn version, but you're right Bubble Bobble is one of the games that one HAS to know. It's like saying one does not know Pac-man or Mario.
I've played this a whole lot on the pc and( Keyboard is fairly okay for 2 player games, although I guess this is one game that is better suited for consoles/arcade ) a bit on the nes if I'm not mistaken.

I have pads and sticks for the PC on MAME, but as you probably all know I'm the kind of anally retentive person who isn't happy playing MAME until he's spent half an hour tweaking scanline densities etc, so I'd like to know how the Saturn version compares if anyone's played it extensively.

SH*T... once again, I have realised that I am one of the 29 gamers on the face of the planet who doesn't really care for Bubble Bobble (or Rainbow Islands) There is NO questioning the epic nature of the main theme though. Near unrivalled stuff right there. You know, from all the versions of BBobble I have ever played, across the older platforms, ALL of them have been excellent renditions! Quite a rare eventuality that I think. ERRR... Never played Saturn BBobble though, sorry

If you have an XBOX1 or PS2 there is Taito Legends (29 arcade games) which has a port of the arcade version of Bubble Bobble. Plays and sounds fine to me, played it with the kids a couple of times on XBOX1. Never bothered with XBOX360 because of that reason alone. Also have it on C64 which is a great version in it's own right. There is also a neat GBA version which I have also and has both the original and a modern version of the game. Also works with the link-up cable, some of the game can be copied over to another if the other player lacks a copy but not many levels tho. Best if you each have your own copy. PS. I don't have it on Saturn either.

I reviewed it for this site - I have the PAL version. It's solid as far as I can see. The graphics are slightly better than the arcade version - they have had a bit of a touch up - and the sound is just like the arcade - but there is no way to save your progress or high scores which is a bit crap - no excuse for that really. It comes with an equally good version of Rainbow Islands (looks just like the arcade) and a graphically enhanced version of Rainbow Islands on the same disc. I think I read in Retro Gamer that the Saturn version of Rainbow Islands doesn't have the hidden islands that appear in the arcade mode but not sure if that is the case as Retro Gamer can sometimes be a bit flakey with respect to accuracy. www.segasaturn.co.uk/games/pal/B/bubblebobble/index.htmlSaturn also plays host to the gorgeous Bubble Symphony....

Great thanks for that DavyK, excellent review, I'll give the Saturn version a go when we get chance.
The C64 port is absolutely fantastic, I used to play it with my mum loads when I was little, happy memories!

High score saving comes with the Taito Legends version as with all games and Taito Legends 2 has Bubble Symphony. While I remember both of these compilations were released for PC also. copy of Taito Ledgends 2 on PC on ebay.co.uk for £4 but don't forget this has Bubble Symphony and not Bubble Bubble as that came with Taito Legends 1. Nice to see some love for the C64 version.

I have the Taito Legends (1&2) for PS2 - if going that route just be sure you have a proper RGB cable because Bubble Bobble is murdered when played at 50Hz - the music even plays slowly - shocking.

That is bad, you don't think of shit like this when you have the XBOX1 versions and always have the machine in 60hz. Mind you one of the coolest things of last gen were all these arcade/emulation ports such as Midway Arcade Treasures, Capcom Collection, Namco Museum & Tecmo Classic Arcade. They did offer a more official way of owning such games tho and were a ray of sunshine even if some of the ports were half arsed. Fun for 5 mins any way. 1 game still eludes us and that's Ikari Warriors the actual arcade machine. Never has come home arcade perfect from. I see it once, maybe 1989 in the arcades and never since.

ACTUALLLLLY... the arcade version was released on PSN for use on PS3 & PSP (i.e. buy it for use on both). I don't own it, but SNK released a load of their classic pre-NeoGeo titles on PSN a while ago. They also released SNK Classics Vol Zero for PSP (boo!) which also contained all of the same games, basically.

It's kind of bad on the Saturn, same with Rainbow Islands. From what I remember they used either the Amiga or ST version as a base, not the coin-op so superficial stuff like scoring and the appearance of secret items is broken but more importantly the way the bubbles behave is quite inaccurate which makes later levels much harder when you need to get creative with them. It just stops being enjoyable after the first third of the game or so because the levels were designed around specific jumping mechanics and bubble behaviour so it all falls apart. For a quick bash it does the job but if you want to get good at it and finish the game it's MAME all the way sadly. While I am at it the only good home port of Rainbow Islands is the PC Engine CD version. Despite being ported to everything these two games did not get good home treatments! Even on the Taito PS2 disks, they are 480i and Rainbow Islands has the edited music. I used to play the ST ports all the time and they rank as two of my favourite games ever so that kind of saddens me. Maybe one day I will own the boards...
