Who'll be our bidder who buys and scans these? If all goes well I might be able to raise 2-300$ for the saturn manual, but I would very much like to actually own the thing. I have a scanner so that's not a problem.

omp is going to be the one to purchase it. He's purchasing all the others and is going to scan them all.

I have been contacted by the organizer of the donation funds who wants to ensure that these manuals are scanned and shared with the Sega fans. Unfortunately though, it appears that he's currently receiving a lot of flack for his genuinely noble efforts - at least from another forum (hopefully not ours too). I was very angry to hear about this, but it unfortunately underlines the mentality of many so called 'fans'. Especially as 'omp' has listed some of his consoles on eBay to fund this project!! So to be completely honest, I'm extremely disappointed with the lack of support here on the forum. I happily donated half of the funds target to ensure that the information is shared with the Saturn community (i.e. US!!). I don't care about owning the manual myself, I'd just like to see its contents shared - I'm also disappointed to see that no-one else seems to share this passion other than omp. I do know for a fact however, that the technical manual will be of considerable use to the Saturn community. I am also aware that there are a lot of suspicious people around who aren't prepared to contribute to this cause (obviously though, I'm not one of them). Personally I think it's a shame that people here aren't rallying around this noble cause and that no-one else has seen fit to contribute. As it stands, at the moment there is the considerable risk that this will fall into the hands of a collector as a 'trophy' rather than being actively shared with the rest of the Saturn fanbase or indeed, the community here. Obviously, I'm more than aware that the items seller has caused some consternation here on SS:UK and has been deservedly banned (one message would have sufficed, rather than spamming after all). However, It would be a shame if this generates negativity in regards to omp's cause. Personally, I've placed my good faith in him and I'm sorry that other members of the forum aren't prepared to do the same. I had hoped that perhaps others would follow my example and donate. Yet to my surprise and disappointment - NOTHING. Is it really too much to ask? Is the price too high? Is it only good enough to own the original yourself? Some people seem to think so, or at least that's what I can only presume. I really hoped that between us we could make a difference (after all, the odd donation here and there quickly adds up) but it seems that I was mistaken, which is a real shame. If you feel differently then by all means - prove me wrong!!

I'm currently liquidating my emergency funds so I can help out with this. However it might not come out fast enough due to the many bank days it requires.
I'd really like to end up as the one who ones the real copies of the Saturn documents, but in the end I'm happy if they at least get shared some way. Just the preview pictures put up for the auctions already cleared up a few unclear things about Mega CD models; I'm sure the full documents will provide even more info.

Cheers zyrobs - I knew I could count on you. As for actually owning the thing - sure, I'd love to see this in my hands too (or yours for that matter, as heaven knows you'd put it to good use - that's a certainty). Unfortunately though, it's precisely this 'desire' that will hike up the price. The bottom line is that first and foremost this should be shared. Personally, as I stated above though, I really don't give a shit - I'll be happy enough to ensure that we get the manual in one form or another (and it doesn't end up with some dumbass who's only real use for it will be 'kudos' among other collectors). I'll keep my fingers crossed and pray that you get the funds though zyrobs and that other members can take the time to donate too.

Just wanted to add that we have unlimited webspace and bandwidth at SS:UK, I'd only be too happy to host scans...

Thank you guys for the confidence.
I hope you guys are aware that these are PHOTOCOPIES from the original manuals. They are not the ORIGINALS.
I have PM'ed InfernalCombustion offering a refund of what he donated +$20-30 from me to pass onto you guys and let yourselves have a crack at it.
Cheers Pete

I've been away on business and won't be home until Thursday. I'm just now hearing about this and am intrigued. Please pardon my ignorance but I have a couple of questions: 1) How are these going to be beneficial? I have 6 Saturn consoles and would hope that would get me through my life expectency. But, I would be willing to donate if the consensus here is that something definitive would be obtained from having them. 2) What are the issues being raised on the other forum that InfernalCombustion mentions? 3) Where do you donate? I checked a link on Sega 16 but it fir not work. I only have the Kindle available at the moment so it will have to wait until I return home.

For 1), these docs have complete part listings and proper identifications, pinouts, characteristics, etc.. This alone is incredibly useful and would help any development one would want to do with the hardware, and it could potentially help us identify unknown parts in the machine.
Moreover, it is a SERVICE manual, so it also has instructions on how to fix potential issues with the machine, as well as instructions on how to recalibrate the lasers. This latter would still require special equipment (test cds, oscilloscopes), but I'm positive that we could find the test CDs once we know which ones to look for, and having the instructions public would mean that we at least know what to do with the machine. Right now recalibrating used up lasers in the saturn is purely guesswork.
I can raise a good 200$ for these manuals but I'm not entirely sure I can get it all by the 18th. However if the seller has a few extra days patience, I can surely send the money by then, so you should consider that much more for the bid pool.
I'd very much like if we had an IRC channel of some sort to properly discuss who buys this and who to send the money for. Will omp bid for all the manuals? Or is he backing out now? We need this shit clarified stat. The auctions all end a good 5 minutes from each other, so it would be good practice if separate people worked on it. Personally I consider the Saturn, Mega CD, and Megadrive manuals the most important, in that order. If I can get my money onto my paypal account, I'll volunteer for bidding on the Saturn one. But do not consider my support concrete until I actually get my money there. Another month without paying the rent...
Yes, but I'd still like to own them because I'm a bitter, utterly selfish bastard who wouldn't trust anyone else to scan them right.

The 16bit manuals will be taken care of. I currently have 3 consoles on ebay (av modded atari 7800, modded sms2 and modded sega nomad) on a short 5 day auction. Funds from these will be for the 16bit manuals along with the regular fund raiser. Again i have access to A3 & A1 scanners.
I don't mind running with the saturn auction, if you guys are happy for me to do so. The only issue i have is i don't know who is currently bidding on it. The other manuals we do know. Also the saturn manual looks to be for the first revision, you will see the power supply is attached in the top part of the case (can be seen in one of the pics).

I'm just saying that if some money remains from the funds I'd push for the Saturn manuals, I'd donate that for the Megadrive & Mega CD manuals. But since the manuals all end at the same time, and not in the order I'd prioritize them for myself, it is not possible to allocate the funds so simply.

As omp has stated, he has offered me a full refund on my donation to the ChipIn fund plus $20-30. Personally though, I have every faith in him concerning bidding on (and winning) the item. He has been been very up front and honest concerning his intentions regarding bidding on the manuals and sharing them with us - nobody made him set up the fund, he did it because he thought it was the best thing to do to ensure that everybody could get their hands on the contents - which is something I find commendable. I am more than happy for omp to bid on the Saturn Manual on our behalf - something which I also feel he is in the best position to do, considering the item location and the ending time, shipping costs/timescale etc. As for scanning the item itself - well, all joking aside, it isn't exactly rocket science is it?? The ChipIn fund is still up and running and I urge anyone who's previously expressed an interest in contributing to please make a donation - any amount, no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. ;D sega8bitservicemanuals.chipin.com/sega-saturn-service-manuals
