Somehow we didn't have a thread about this particular game.
I've bought mine last summer although only played a few times since then. Fired it up today and... holy shit is it hard! For now I play on the lowest possible level, and lowest speed, with auto-guard, and the farthest I've got (after few continues) was the Jaggernaut who basically annihilates me (I played as Wolverine by the way). Without continues I usually end my arcade mode ventures on the 3rd opponent. On default settings I pretty much have no idea what's going on, aside from the fact that I'm being ravished.
I definitely like it better than Vampire Hunter, which I owned some time ago, but this is much a more challenging game.
I'm still not sure if it's my d-pad or I'm doing something wrong, but quite often I have problems pulling of some attacks (quarters etc.), especially when I need to do them fast. I also don't quite understand how throws work, I mean I know how to do them but most of the time I can't pull them off, and when I do, I don't know why it worked in this particular case. The CPU though, he seems to throw me, or counter my throws, with almost 100% efficiency.
I never was good at 2D fighters in particular anyway... but I still want to enjoy them.
Also, is there a "top records" table for survival mode? After getting my ass kicked it only shows the regular table (with points). Also, they could've made the team battle mode playable against CPU too, like VF2 did.
Thoughts? Experiences?

THOUGHTS & EXPERIENCES?... Well, COTA is still my favourite of the Capcom Marvel titles personally. I sued to play this a LOT in the arcade way back when (early-mid teens) and the first time I ever laid my eyes on the machine (along with SFAlpha) my jaw dropped. I mean, I was about to play Street Fighter (essentially) with XMEN instead. F*ck!!! It's a great game, but if you're new to it, yes, it can seem overly hard. If you think the player characters are tough, wait til you meet the end boss (I know who that is, but if you don't I'd rather not spoil it ) The whole chain combo system felt pretty fresh at the time and was mirrored in SFA, but later dropped in the sequels. The Super/Specials bar can maybe seem a bit difficult to grasp, but like the SF titles, it pretty much spans across 3 levels, just not quite as obviously, but it does notify you of such progress. It's this bar which will be causing you your headaches when attempting to throw your opponents, as the CPU will pretty much *always* use 1 lvl. of the bar to tech out of your throw (i.e. get out of successfully). Also, much like SSF2X/Turbo, Supers can only be launched when the bar is completely filled. My main partners in crime are Omega Red (my main) and Cyclops. I also like to throw some Iceman, Psylocke and Silver Samurai in their for fun too. I also use Wolverine, but less often than the others. NOT because he is less awesome (it's f*cking Wolverine man!), but because I think all my friends would always pick him and I've always had a dislike for same on same in fighters. Not sure why? I REMEMBER WHEN... Marvel Super Heroes finally released at the same arcade. Indeed, I remember that PCB replacing the COTA one. Marvel was good (love the Infinity Gem system) but I really felt like it wasn't as good, or as classy as XMEN. That was a truly amazing first outing. Obviously, tbh, the VS titles ARE better, but there was something a little more less frantic about COTA I preferred, coupled with the fact that I liked it being a dedicated XMEN fighter with no other 'interference'. ANYWAY... stick with COTA. It's a great game, and with practice, you will oft be able to overcome being unwillingly 'ravished'

Maybe I might just make a review about it. And maybe you might be able to watch it and find my opinions on it. I feel if I say anything than it could ruin what I will say about the game in the video.

I remember playing this game on the original Playstation, the dificulty was really crushing! I love 2D capcom fighters and my favourite is Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, and seems like every character on CotA behaves like Mech Gouki from MSHvsSF. Great game tho.

Managed to beat Jaggernaut, and Magneto afterwards. Got some ideas from youtube how to beat the first one, Magneto was bit easier to figure out on my own (the tornado claw+wall combo proved very effective).
Before that I tried to play with Cyclops and Psylocke for a change, instead of Wolverine, but found it pretty hard to play effectively, I couldn't get past the 2/3rd stage against... Wolverine xd Then I switched to him and advanced to the bosses without using continues. In general it feels like he's a character aimed for beginners.

I feel like Cyclops is more aimed at begginers because of his projectile with strong punch and how fast he uses his optic blast, he feels more like Ryu.

XMEN COTA is still my favourite 2D fighter for the saturn. It's a real shame it came out so early as it's not quite as graphically impressive as some of the later arcade ports by capcom. I do plan on getting the arcade board one day.
Ice man all the way. Dropping ice boulders on people never gets old.

Juggernaut for me all the way. I loved him also in SF x X-Men.

I think the only characters it was missing was Gambit and Rogue (Maybe Jubilee?), they could have even added some enemies on the other side as well like Sinister and Frost. Maybe it would have gotten too big..?

THERE'S NO HARM IN THAT MATE... especially if you agree with any of the points I made concerning the game. Obviously, if you don't, then don't mention them! But yeah, if you wanted 'Carterise' any of the points I mentioned, then go for it...

I used to play this game a lot. The Saturn port is really nice even with the cut animation. About the only perfect arcade port of it was for PC Dos and you need something like a S3 Trio64 to get the game to display right on pc. I always found the most robust characters in the game to be Wolverine, Akuma, Omega Red, and the sentinel. Akuma can go toe to toe with Magneto if you are a really good Akuma player, where as the other characters have some weakness or flaw that requires you to fight him strategically.
