Saturn seemingly 'broke down' during gameplay?...

IT'S REALLY NOT AT ALL OFTEN...
you'll see me posting in this section of the forum. But, here it is. My contribution.
I'm really hoping that the likes of Zyrobs (etc) can shed some light on this seemingly horrific instance

SO, I'VE MADE NO SECRET HERE...
of my constant ongoing issues I have with my Saturn with regards to it's cart slot deficiency. Quite simply, it just doesn't work. Anyway, I was hankering for some Capcom Fighting Game Action on the Saturn, soo decided to unpack one of the Saturns I had boxed away as a 'spare'.
Now, just to clarify, my 'deficient' Saturn is a JP Saturn that I had the power board swapped out of when I bought it, along with the switchless 60/50 and multi-region mod. No problems there.
However, my newly 'unpacked' Saturn is a stock JP Saturn - end of.
So, I decided to hook it up to my Step-Down Transformer which I used for YEARS with my JP DC - before I too had that modded with a UK PSU and multi-region mod.
As with the DC originally, I put the fig.8 in the back of my Saturn and used a 3-pin UK lead from the Saturn into the Step-Down. I then put the other trailing lead (the input lead) into the mains, and fired up the Saturn.
And voila! It fired up just fine. Sooo... what's the problem you ask?
Well, I was in the midst of a game of SFZero3 when the door bell rand with the takeaway (slob!) so paused the game. We ate, then watched the entire episode of The Voice (ahem!) and then, not long later, I returned to the Saturn. I'd say it'd been paused for a couple of hours max.
Anyway, I got back into it and it was (obviously) as I left it/ had a few more fights, then, mid-fight with Ken, the screen went off - went static and a horrible whining noise came through my speakers. Not loud, but certainly audible. Understandably, I was concerned. So, I quickly shot up and turned it off. I unplugged the Saturn and felt that the left hand side of the Saturn (where the power board is) was pretty damn warm.
I'm not at all experience with this sort of thing so decided to swap out the Power Lead and try again (in case the fuse in the plug had blown) but it was the same. So seemingly, something has 'happened' to the Saturn itself? Which is worrying
I have a 3rd Saturn which I unpacked and tried out the exact same way (only briefly! Call me dangerous) and it worked just fine. So, seems my other Saturn has overheated or something?
CAN ANYONE...
please offer any advice or help to try and rectify the issue. Is there perhaps a fuse on the power board that needs swapping out, or is this Saturn dead?
I really hope it isn't
