Right, just gone to play NiGHTS and my PAL mkI Saturn will either giver a sharp black and white picture or a piss-poor, blurry colour picture. Any ideas? Bloody annoyed, was right in the mood for half and hour of NiGHTS before Reaper...

Bummer, ads.
Right - have you tried the process of elimination thing?
Try a different tv, different SCART socket, pulling it part way out, pushing it in a bit more firmly than usual (at the tv side), ditto for the Saturn end, clean contacts, blow out the saturn end. (careful you don't spit, though!)
Finally, if you have one of the SCART leads with the collar that you can unscrew at the SCART end, unscrew it and make sure all the indiviual pins are seated properly in the casing. Be very careful not to unseat any of the pins, mind.
Good luck, mate.

I've wiggled it about and it will go to colour, but the picture is pants. I don't think it's the TV.

Is the game NTSC?
Because that would explain the black and white, if the composite pin was the only pin working.

NTSC would not give him a "sharp" b&w picture though, sounds like a new scart lead is in order to me.

This seriously does not make any sense.
If the cable was RGB, it would either give you a Red, Green, Or Blue picture, if it was Composite, it would give you either Color or no picture.
Only if it was S-Video, would you get a sharp black and white picture.
Did Sega make any S-video scarts fo the Saturn?

As far as I'm aware all the S-Video leads, at least in the UK were 3rd party.

From the segasaturn.co.uk homepage, click on "Documents & Downloads" and then "Getting an import Saturn working in PAL land" for how I got this problem resolved
