Got Darius Gaiden recently and have been playing it this morning for the first time. So far it's pretty much what I expected - a hard ass game! Playing on Easy mode and the farthest I have made it so far after a couple hours of play is to the 5th of 7 waves of levels. I've always liked the Darius games - had Darius Twin on SNES, and G Darius for PSX is one of my favorite games ever. So far I'd put Gaiden somewhere between those two - it's a sweet game, definitely an upgrade on Darius Twin. Love the boss fights and the many paths through the game, but doesn't blow me away quite like G Darius (the ability to capture any enemy and have them fight beside you was an amazing dynamic in that game). Time to play some more!

Shining Force 3 is getting better now I'm in to chapter 2. This game is really interesting in that it is split in to 3 discs that were released as standalone games in Japan but for the rest of the world they only released disc one with an altered ending because they were not going to release disc 2 and 3 with the Saturn on its last legs. So basically the western world got a 3rd of the whole game with a modified ending to tie it up. The diehard Shining Force fans weren't having that though, they've gone and translated the whole Japanese release for us so that we can experience the game the way it was meant to be which is awesome. I am just astounded by the kindness and effort that goes in to such a massive project like that. These fans gave so much time and made no personal gain from doing it other than giving us less able folks a chance to play the game in its entirety. Yeah, and the Shining Force III Translation team really did a stellar job with the patch. No significant bugs, and it fits almost seamlessly into the game, both in terms of layout and the tone of the prose. The amount of time they sacrificed doing the organization, translation, interpretation, text insertion, sorting out of technical issues, and bug testing is astounding. I believe this was the first translation patch for a Saturn game, too. Really an amazing project all around. The Shining Force III situation worked out really well for westerners back in the day, too, since scenario 1 is the best of the three scenarios by a comfortable margin. We were quite lucky to have it brought over, what with the Saturn being on its last ropes at the time. The reason I wanted to play this longer version is that you meet various characters through the game and make various decisions which impact on who you meet and who you can recruit as the game progresses but with the Western version of the game being cut off most of those decisions and characters you meet mean absolutely nothing since there is no later game for them to come and join your team! To be honest, these character recruitment branches are pretty uninteresting. Of the 7 characters you can recruit in this way, 4 of them are of the form "Character A joins unless he was killed in a previous scenario", and 2 are of the form "If character A was killed in a previous scenario or you play without save data from previous scenarios, character B joins instead of character A." The remaining one is just a useless mascot character who joins if you got both the useless mascot characters from the previous scenarios. Also, bizarrely enough, the two characters you get by default are much more useful than their counterparts which you get by fulfilling the special conditions in previous scenarios. The concept of long-term recruitment conditions has been done better in other games.

Time to play some more! Yes Yes Yes!!! I positively LOVE Darius Gaiden - It took me years to get this one after being disappointed and put off by the extremely lacklustre Darius 2 but Darius G is in another league altogether - It's amazing and unarguably one of the best side scrollers on the machine. The soundtrack is one of the best of its kind too - I love the lady singing on the soundtrack - really makes you think about how much time and energy goes into making these beauties and why they never get famous out of Japan and remain unappreciated and confined to the lives of people like us HA! As soon as I get my new Saturn I'm about to start re-doing some of these videos in higher definition so I'll be playing these a lot The Epic Saturn Darius GToday, I have been mostly playing Layer Section 2 - I'm going through a bit of a Raystorm phase (again)

Had a bit of a shumps day yesterday as well. Started with Hyper Duel, moved onto the super incredible Battle Garegga and finished with Radiant Silvergun. Strangely I found myself bored of RSG after 15 minutes and turned it off. Must be the Battle Garegga effect, it's hard for any Shooter to follow it's awesomeness.

Sega Saturn really is the dream system for fans of Shoot 'em ups isn't it. There are so many of them, especially Japan exclusives.

Yah hear hear - I hate it when people ask for a 'top 5' of Saturn shooters as there are just far too many excellent ones - you wonder why they released such a tiny amount of them in the UK, seriously misread the 90s European game playing consumers in my opinion considering even the Genesis got 10 times what we did on Saturn - The PS1 has some great ones too particularly R-Type Delta and Einhander, but the Saturn is more than capable of holding its own against even modern consoles in relation to shmups with regards to quantity AND quality - I had a bit of a wobble this week when I dug the PS1 out and played Raycrisis for about three days (in between work) but I need my Radiant Silvergun fix as I'm starting to get ants under my skin lulz - I just wish they'd ported Raycrisis to the Saturn it could have easily handled it and the Saturn pad was always better than the PS1 to play with as well.

I've owned my Saturn for 19 years today, so I put on some VF2, Daytona CCE, and Daytona Circuit Edition.
PAL VF2 at 60Hz is truly amazing because it's so much faster and fluid.
Sadly Daytona CCE wouldn't work on my modded Saturn (thanks to a nasty looking scratch) but it works fine on my original PAL system. After playing CCE and CE back to back, CE is obviously the better game. It's far more polished, has a link up mode, and even plays more like the coin-op.

I just spent an after noon at our local Dave and Busters and played the crap out of the Daytona USA arcade there. I couldn't get higher that 11th on the beginner track! Anyway, I think I caught the Daytona bug again and am going to get cracking on CE on my Saturn again soon.

I've just started playing Resident Evil on the Saturn. Never played the original, only the Gamecube REmake and the first 5 minutes of the godawful DS port. I started it because Tomb Raider was starting to sour my Saturn experience. Anyway, RE Saturn is pretty great. It's so different to the Remake and it's sorta throwing me off. In a good way. I love the absolutely dreadful voice acting, and it's kinda refreshing having the puzzles and route different to what I'm used to. The only thing I truly miss is the quick turn. Already at Yawn. I hope that I can get both this and TR done by the weekend so I can start playing DHA.

Why Bazza didnt get an Oscar, I'll never know. Nice to hear you're playing original Resi. As you can guess, it's my favourite game series. Yes the remake rather shook up the game and puzzles. Objectively speaking the remake is better, but the original has plenty of charm and is hugely playable. You'll find most of the enemies a lot harder in the original (at least on normal mode), they seem to do more damage, there are fewer herbs, no daggers, and it's harder to aim. No crimsons though thankfully! I'd dump TR for a while if I were you and get going on DHA- much more fun.

Well I've beaten DHA a bunch of times. I wanna start speedrunning Hardcore mode. I only have three more levels left in TR so I wanna grin and bear it for a little longer before I probably never touch it again!

I quickly decided TR was a technical show game for me. I just don't find any TR games before Legend to be very enjoyable.
I've been playing NiGHTS a fair amount. Beaten the first six dreams but now I need to get my averages up to unlock the last ones.
