Yeah. I remember enjoying TR2 a lot as a kid, but that could be nostalgia. I'm pretty sure I completed it too, so it couldn't have been as infuriating as this one. With the first, most of my focus is on trying to refrain from ripping the cd out of the console and flinging it out of the window.
I really need to play NiGHTS. I have only ever played the demo on the 360 and didn't really 'get' it. I think my best best is to grab the full game on a proper console (ie, the Saturn) and dive straight in. At the moment it's not a priority, but I defo wanna get as it's pretty iconic as a Saturn game.

I have TR2 and...it's not a lot of fun either. The movement controls have dated badly.

Yeah, I can imagine. I first played TR2 when it came out so I can't remember. I have no intention of replaying it, as I fear I will ed up despising it as much as TR.
I'd rather let it lie in the pit of nostalgia, never to be brought back up.

Weird thing about TR1 is that my nostalgia for it involved not liking it much back in 97 when I rented it from Blockbuster. However after beating the Xbox 360 TR reboot a few years ago I gave TR for Saturn another go and really liked it. So I had the odd experience of not liking upon release, when I had nothing else to really play, but then liking it in 2014 lol. Not sure how to explain that one.
As for Nights, yes, you must play it. Its not for everyone but its in the higher end of my Top 10. Its really such a beautiful game. The gameplay itself is smooth and addicting but the atmosphere, music, graphics really make it a full experience. One of the most iconic Saturn games.
Res Evil Saturn may be my favorite game on the system. I don't really do hard rankings so don't take that as me declaring my #1, but its just a great all around fun ride. Its also all the more special that Capcom took the time to make a nice port that was tailored for the system. All of the cool extras made it a nice treat from them as well at the time. As far as playing it now after you've ran through other versions... kinda like I said for Tomb Raider, I never played #1 back then. My first RE game was RE2 on PS1 in probably 1998. Amazing game. Didn't play RE1 until I got the Saturn version years later.

Tomb Raider is still on my list of Saturn games to play in 2016. When I gave my copy a test-play last year, I really liked both the feel of the controls and the look of the graphics.

I was impressed at first too, but it gets pretty obnoxious. The graphics are decent, until you need to spot holes in the wall that you need to enter. It's almost impossible to see them (could be my eyesight). As the game progresses it starts getting obnoxious, putting awkward jumps so high up you can't survive and scattering save points very far away. The bit that stopped me playing for ages involved playing a large chunk of level, climbing really high, and then having to jump to a platform that had the save crystal. I missed so many times for literally no reason, since I did the same type of jump on my failed attempts as I did on my successful attempt. The controls are just broken and the design is just designed to make you fail because of the broken controls. I went from being surprisingly impressed to being absolutely infuriated with it. I have two more levels to go and I can't wait until I can put it back on the shelf and never touch it again. This has been one of the worst gaming experiences I have had this year, beaten only by Earthworm Jim 3D. Hopefully you'll enjoy it though. Or at least get less stressed with it

Is it where you have to running jump a succession of pillars with a crystal on the last one, and failing means a fall to your death? If so, I agree it's a pain in the arse.

Yeah, I think so. It's in Egypt. You have to do a load of block pushing and kill a load of panthers and (irritating) mummies. That made it so much worse as it took a while to get back to that point.
Funny thing is, after Egypt, the mine level is alright and the Atlantis level isn't completely horrible (only a bit). It may even end on a little bit of a positive as I haven't encountered anything really terrible yet. Although the first boss in the mines was annoying with pistols only.
Too little, too late though.
After this I can concentrate fully on Resi. A game that's actually good!

Had a blast playing Tempest 2000 last night, bought off Ebay for a few quid last week. Sort of remember playing it back in the day on PC (perhaps a demo, seem to remember it being on the floppy disk version of PC Zone magazine) but plays so much nicer on Saturn.

Tempest looks cool. As an update, I finished TR so now it's all about Resi. That final level on TR was awful. Shame as the two before were actually alright.

Enjoying Saturn mode of DoDonPachi. It seems to act as a novice mode. It is slightly easier and has more generous 1UP score boundaries. It also has a level 0 complete with its own boss. It has one loop only and apparantly there is no requirement to reach the true final boss.
In the options you can select to play it as loop 1 or loop 2.
Managed to get to level 5 last night on it (loop 1, blue ship). It should be a nice segway into the arcade mode which is just that bit too tough for me at the mo. I find the usual Cave novice modes to be too easy - this seems to just have the difficulty pitched right.

Ahh. DoDonpachi is my sugar rush! Such a burst of sweetness. So recently I played Keriotosse. Still can't beat the final Dragon after so many attempts but I enjoy trying. Also did some Super Tempo. Great game but just wasn't in the mood to progress further than the third level so then did some Ghen War. I really appreciate the mood of Ghen War, such an interesting atmosphere it creates. Finally finished with some D & D Collection Tower of Doom. I'm usually a Shadow over Mystara disc 2 guy but so I deliberately re-visted Disc 1 as it doesn't get played often.

I really wish I could get into stuff like DoDonpachi. I can see the appeal of bullet hell / shmups but I don't get any enjoyment out of them.
Anyway, I've just finished Resi. First time playing the very original (not including the DS version), and I loved it. It's a very different beast to REmake, but still good. REmake actually just remixed a lot of things, rather than improving, so many things are just different. General navigation threw me off a little bit in areas because of how different some parts are.
The puzzles are a lot easier, but I didn't mind that so much since Resi puzzles got quite convoluted as the series progressed. They're enough to vary the gameplay, and that's fine.
I also find the game infinitely less stressful than REmake. The regular enemies are harder than in REmake, but the zombies are instantly decapitated with the shotgun, so the main threats are bosses and hunters. Also the lack of Crimsons is a godsend. I love the crimsons, but they really set me on edge for most of the game.
The voice acting is terrible, but it does add a certain degree of charm. It's not TR bad, it's B movie bad - so it works well.
I can see myself definitely playing again in future, despite owning the remake as well. Similar to Pokemon GSC vs HGSS, they're different enough to warrant enjoyment in their own right.
So now I've beaten all of my Saturn games, I'm gonna work on a couple of speedruns and then maybe pick up a new game or two if I have the cash!

I really wish I could get into stuff like DoDonpachi. I can see the appeal of bullet hell / shmups but I don't get any enjoyment out of them. It's a genre that requires a bit of effort - even for someone who has played old school STGs in the 80s and 90s. The games look the same (apart from the mad bullet patterns) but in actual fact gameplay wise they are pretty far removed from the old classics like Gradius and R-Type. There are several gameplay features you have to be aware of and when you start learning to play "properly", you start seeing how brilliantly designed the better examples of the genre are. it isn't an accessible genre but I'd argue that's because it's a deep one - and ultimately worth the effort. Well designed modern STGs are a cat's cradle of interweaving rules that require the player to walk a tightrope between risk and reward. You do have to appreciate the concept of a high score though which is embedded into old school sensibilities.

I'm still smashing my way through Shining Force 3, it's become one of my favourite TRPGs now. It's been interesting how the units have developed for me e.g early on Eldar was so weak she was useless but is now a strong unit for me and Cybel who was a young Dantares is now possibly my weakest and most unreliable (in the first team).
