I've been playing a lot of Darius II over the last week or so. Holy smokes, the challenge ramps up quite a bit in that one after the first few levels. I have a confession to make. Previously I had been playing a ton of Darius Gaiden which I could clear pretty reliably, but after 20 or so attempts at Darius II, I decided there was no F'ing way I would beat it and caved in and used a couple of cheats. One cheat increases the number of credits from 3 to 5, the other increases the rate of autofire. With those in place, I've beaten it a couple of times. Maybe this will motivate me to try again without... Fun game overall, with good music and atmosphere, though the challenge level is definitely a relic from the days of quarter-gobbling arcade SHMUPs. If you like Darius Gaiden or G Darius it's worth a try, though it's aged worse than those (it's from the late 80s after all). If you don't like Darius Gaiden or G Darius, I'd stay away.

Ive been on a massive shooter kick the last couple months and looking into getting Darius II for Saturn but didn't seem worth it from what I saw on YT. Although Im embarrassed to say I still don't have Darius Gaiden or G Darius which needs to be remedied soon.

Cyber Speedway and Scorcher. Tried to get back into Tomb Raider and the controls are just so frustrating that I don't think I have the patience to finish it.

I'm the opposite with Tomb Raider, I always feel super-comfortable slipping back into the tank controls... it's the controls and atmosphere I crave when I have a Tomb Raider hankering. Cyber Speedway and Scorcher <3

With stuff like Tomb Raider, I can literally know where I'm gonna land by how many steps Lara is taking and where she's situated on geometry. For those exact reasons though, I can see how it would deter others.

It's not the walking controls. It's the jumps. I'm sure I'll go back to it soon enough but right now they're irritating me.

Been a great Saturn weekend. More progress on Grandia, the closer I get to compeltion the more I'm loving the game. I also finally completed Contra Legacy of War. I got to the final level which was proving problematic after a number of attempts. Not quite as impossible as Shinobi X but worthy enough for me to insert the AR cheat codes for superior weaponary and infinite lives. Great ending and will definitly be revisting it again soon. A very enjoyable game which clearly doesn't deserve all the negativity it recieves. Also more Batsugun, Tennis Arena and Zero Divide Final conflict. Continuing the mech theme, I boggled down with Cyberbots, playing closer attention to the body type attachments and monitoring their differences.
Also reached the final level of Astal but didn't manage to beat the final boss. Will try again over the next weekend but if it continues giving me grief, I might be tempted to insert some AR codes for Astal as well. Overall a great Saturn weekend. Will probably be giving Iron Storm and Winning Post another crack over the next weekend. The latter is bothersome as I have to constantly remove all my save files from the system memory as it requires over 400 blocks of memory space. Surely that must be a Saturn record.

A very enjoyable game which clearly doen't deserve all the negativity it recieves. Glad I could spread the word about that game. Everything you said is so true. The Saturn version works so well as a run-n-gun. Its smooth, and the polygon bosses look very good for the system. There are also enough interesting mid boss battles that the overall design is well done by Apaloosa. The last level is as crazy and creative as the rest of the game. I didn't have to use cheats for it but do recall having a lot of do overs to beat it. Its one of the rare US only Saturn games (No JPN release). One of the other ones off the top of my head is Hercs Adventures which is also very good. However I swear I read somewhere that Apaloosa was happier with the way the Saturn version of Contra ran. Ill have to check out the PS1 copy I have to compare. If thats true its sad it may really never be known about as its a bit of a rare/hard to find US only release. All of its bad pub came from the US Contra fans. As we know Contra is a massively popular 2D franchise in the US. And Id agree that the early titles on NES, Genesis/SNES are some of the best games ever. However this led to no one giving a 3D, out of the box Contra game a chance. They wanted nothing to do with it. I maintain that if this game simply dropped the Contra title and was called anything else, it would have been tried and probably enjoyed. I still have it in my personal Top 20 Saturn games despite having played many great games since.

Decided to jump back into the Saturn starting with Clockwork Knight. I think its simple enough to be a good choice though I'm playing the Japanese version and would like to look at the translations of the between level character dialogues. I have a feeling beating this one is simply a matter of playing it long enough I haven't felt it give me much challenge unless I'm just rushing and not trying.

Been a great Saturn weekend. More progress on Grandia, the closer I get to compeltion the more I'm loving the game. Started playing through this last week and I'm totally absorbed already. Just gorgeous and very immersive, I can tell I'll be savouring every moment of this. Also been playing a little of Keio 2, somehow I'd managed to skip over it. Amazing designs, with a very World of Illusion vibe to it. Just a platformer that's a pleasure to play through.

The Saturn version really is something quite special. So visually stuuning that it justifies slogging through with a translation guide. Still my favourite JPN Saturn game and I'm yet to complete it. Always have time for Keio 2. I love it's randomness. Funny you mention World of Illusion. I origianlly bought Saturn Mickey & Donald a few years back expecting that game to be on the disc. I was hugely dissapointed when I learnt it was just Castle of Illusion & Quckshot. Still a good bundle though. Been playing my final and latest Saturn purchase 'Soukyugurentai' at the moment. Awesome shooter and easy to get to grips with having schooled myself in the art of Galatic Attack, it makes the multi-tasking busyness of Soukyugurentai easier to comprehend. My only niggle is the amount of JPN text in the options menu but I'm slowing working out what all the functions do so I'm pretty sure I'll love it even more than I already do as more time goes by.

My only niggle is the amount of JPN text in the options menu I had the same struggles trying to figure out the menu. This helped me out a lot, I snatched it from another forum a while ago (probably shmups). Credit to the original poster. From memory the extended options only appear after a certain amount of play hours.

I suspect the Extra options and the Battle Garegga demo is Otokuyo version, I opted for the original version since I preferred the artwork on the cover. Interesting that when played in US mode via my switchless reset, I noticed a few graphical glitches but in JPN mode the game runs smoothly and as it should. Made me wonder why as both US & JPN are 60hz. Very strange.

Anyway, that extra options menu does appear on the standard release of the game. I think the number of available things to toggle increases each time you play it. Obviously you need to make sure a save slot is available. You don't have to complete it though to increase the options available.
