What with Legends having just landed on current-gen consoles, now seems like a good time to look back at the first Rayman game. Looking at the formats it came out on, the Saturn version could theoretically be the best. Being the annoying perfectionist I am, I wondered if any of you knew how Saturn Rayman stacks against the Jaguar version and/or the DOS version. Presumably the DOS version runs at 640x480 rather than 240p but of course running PC games that old is never without issues.
Being as the Saturn was a 2D power-house, is this the definitive version of the game?

Apparently, the Jaguar version - in terms of graphical detail and overall animation, is the definitive version. However, it does differ slightly in level layout and minor details from the PS1 & Saturn ports and, of course, it lacks the CD audio too.
However, it does come on a cartridge! (But... for the Jaguar).
I haven't compared the PS1 & SAT versions directly, so couldn't answer if not factoring the original Jaguar version into the equation (i.e. just a PS1 vs SAT discussion)...

From what I've seen I'd say apart from a few minor art differences the Saturn comes out on top. People claim the Jaguar version has 65,000 colors while the Saturn and PS1 only have 32,000 colors, but I really don't see any evidence to prove that. Some claim the Jaguar has more animation, but again I haven't seen much evidence to prove that either. I think a lot of it boils down to Jaguar Fanboyism which is pretty rampant on Atari forums.

Yeah I think I'd like the CD soundtrack anyway. As for the DOS version, it actually runs in VGA 320×200×256c originally, so no potential advantage in terms of resolution there. Saturn FTW

Outside of our forum here you'd be surprised at the level of Saturn hate on other Sega forums. For example at Sega-16 there's a good amount of people who hate the Saturn for really petty unrelated reasons such as blaming the Saturn for why they never got a sequel to [insert popular Genesis franchise here].

I agree with Trekkies, it's the sort of straw clutching that Jaguar fans are notorious for. The Jaguar version may well have more colours or more animations, I don't know either way but such a claim is not something I would not take at face value and would require sprite rips and proper colour examination to accept as truthful.

It's an interesting question. Well, there is a "Battle of the Ports" episode of Rayman, isn't there? Yes, there is. I remember seeing a PlayStation vs. Saturn Rayman article online somewhere as well, but I can't seem to find it now. I've seen videos of the Jaguar version and would agree that it doesn't appear significantly better than the other versions. The color palette is noticeably different, but I wouldn't say it's better.

I heard that the soundtrack is different on the Saturn? For some levels anyway. There was music featured in the PS1 version omitted from the Saturn version... which makes ZERO sense tbh. I sat down and played ALL 3 versions not so long ago to compare them for myself. The Jaguar version is notably different from the other two, but I was surprised by differences between the SAT & PS1, that I didn't expect. Like the music for example and the little effects used on the Saturn version at the end of a stage (not in the PS1 version). Also, the Saturn version featured the full intro from the Jag not seen on the PS1 version, etc. From what I played, the SAT & PS1 versions were simply a matter of preference (platform, different touches etc) vs the Jaguar being good, yet different again...
