For anyone who can offer this information forthwith, I'm also interested to know, as I have an 'ornamental' 4+1 sitting pretty that could also use a reflash.
Is there anyone here who can help out with this?

Talking about the official memory cart here... maybe not related but just in case.
Very rare I would image but has happened once to me. The official memory cart glitched and I was locked out from be able to read or clear the thing even tho the Saturn was showing it was there. The only way around it was to wipe the internal memory of the Saturn and only then would it allow me to clear the cartridge there after. Some where both internal and external had messed up even tho the internal did not look like it had. That was the only option left and as luck would have it it worked, cart still running fine and has never done it since. Most likely software related bug from something I played that saved to the cart.

The arflash tool that's used certainly works, as long as it recognizes the model flash chips used.

Memory cards can be formatted from inside the Saturn memory manager too.

Speaking of that app, can it read video cd cards?

but how does it work? I understand nothing from what's on that site I've never used that particular app, but based on the description you select a firmware image from the disc, open the menu and select "flash Action Replay". This launches a secondary tool that does the actual flashing. Speaking of that app, can it read video cd cards? I don't think so, the MPEG card firmware is not directly visible in the memory map. CyberWarriorX wrote a tool for dumping the firmware over CommLink a long time ago, search for "mpgromdump.zip".

I found one once and used it to save one of my dead ARs but I've no idea where I got the image from (and I may manually added later AR firmwares to it). I don't think so, the MPEG card firmware is not directly visible in the memory map. CyberWarriorX wrote a tool for dumping the firmware over CommLink a long time ago, search for "mpgromdump.zip". I can dump the roms directly (which is a funny story in itself; you can read about it at segaxtreme). I have a few dead cards and I want to check if the Saturn can at least read in the roms, to see if the problem is with the stupid PLCC soldering I butchered, or if some other component went bonkers due to solder blobs or so. Considering that these cards go for 20$ to 100$ each on ebay, I'm rather bummed at massacring them, not just because of the value but because I am definitely doing something wrong. So far out of 3 cards, 2 had PLCC mask roms and 1 used SSOP, and BOTH cards using PLCC are no longer functional. Either I'm doing something very wrong while soldering, or the hitachi hn62444bnc mask roms have some self destruct feature I'm unaware of.

There should be a law that people use the same nick everywhere.

There should be a law that people use the same nick everywhere. There are already plenty of too many laws limiting your privacy.
