Can't offer to much insight onto the NBA ones though I do remember people mentioning NBA Jam 98 as being a good one. Personally, I have played NHL Powerplay 96 and NHL All Star Hockey 98. Both are pretty decent but a little tough to score in ] I have NHL Breakaway 98 on the N64 and I really enjoy it even though the shooting controls are a bit wonky, and I know it got a Saturn release.

I agree completely. All-star 98 is actually an update of Powerplay 96 that includes fighting. If you must go the EA route NHL 97 is better than NHL 98. I haven't played the NBA Live or Action games other than to verify they work. But Slam n Jam is surprisingly good. And while not a basketball Sim, NBA Jam TE is a great deal of fun.

That would explain why the games are so similiar. And now that I think about it, there is no fighting in Powerplay 96.
I played NHL 97 on the Genesis, (I am collecting all the NHL games on the Genesis) and all the EA titles are solid titles.

NHL 98 is a slow snore fest. No idea what they were thinking with that one. All Star 98 is definitely the way to go. BTW, I loved NHL 94 on the Genesis. *EDIT* I just scored a nice copy including case of NHL 94 on Sega CD for $1.99 US at a local shop. Got a mint copy of Bill Walsh College Football for Sega CD for $2.99 too!

The pregame speech is fun to listen to and there's a section where you can watch (grainy) footage of goals being scored or saves being made.

I remember NHL 98 and All-Star 98 being two of the last Saturn releases in general. Interesting to have two hockey games that late.
NHL 97 and All Star 98 are solid. Its funny, basically buy the games with Florida Panther players on the front lol.
I do own all of the handful of hockey games releases for the system. I actually have this small enjoyment for Powerplay 96 too.
As for NHL 94 for Sega CD, its sort of a hidden gem. Generally known as one of the best sports games of all time, the sound is actually a huge upgrade on the CD version which is cool. I won an NHL 94 tournament at PAX Gaming Expo years ago and we played it on the Sega CD version oddly enough.

VERY good game!

Nba Action 98' and NBA Jam T.E are the best basket ball games on the Saturn. Its worth owning both as they are so different and are quite cheap. I hear College Slam is good but I've never played it.
As for Hockey games either NHL Powerplay Hockey 97' or NHL All Star 98' The latter is my personal favorite.
EA's NHL 98' is very rough round the edges but has the classic fighting modes between Hockey players. But it also demands over 300 blocks of memory.

VERY good game! I remember the reviews weren't great back in the day but I always shaded towards Sega produced (or in these cases Sega Sports published) titles when it came to Saturn. I enjoy Action quite a bit as well. The Saturn was a bit of an akward bridge between Genesis and Dreamcast for sports games. However each sport has a solid title. NFL didn't get a proper Sega Sports release (NFL 97 isnt great but playable) Baseball got quite a few 3rd party releases in the US that actually aren't bad. But Segas releases were great. The first 2 WSB games are a load of fun. But WSB 98 was the true standout and is absolutely fantastic. Coveted by some as one of the best sports games of that era. One of the best looking on the Saturn as well. Plays a bit slower (or sim like) than the previous entries but those looking for a bit deeper experience this is it. The other titles do provide a bit more arcade style flow which can be a bit more pick up and play. But again WSB 98 was the one where graphically it contended with PS1 sports titles. Really felt like you were next gen. I even compared it favorably to Triple Play 2000 when I got my PS1, The thing about hockey is All Star 98 plays the most consistent but EA always had the presentation down. All Star 98 lacks a lot of "soul" that EA had in their titles but they make up for it a lot in gameplay and cleaner visuals. Im mostly playing the current EA NHL games on a daily basis but will play a couple of the Saturn ones around playoff time.
