Sports games aren't really my thing but arcade games, those are games I can speak intelligently about. It just so happens that NBA JAM TE is both.
It's also on the Genesis and though I own both, I never find the need to go back to the 16 bit version. The Saturn just blows it away, and with my current setup (which includes a scanline generator) it feels very much like the old quarter monster.
My only beef with NBA Jam is that you really can't do any tricks while ball handling. You just dribble traditionally and move in a straight line. Any dodging from side to side is all your performance. There really are no game mechanics to help that along, and that really would have been nice.
So, with this and any Saturn arcade port I have to recommend a joystick. I'd also recommend that you tinker around with your settings, so that you control each team member when they carry the ball. The AI is a tad unfair, so it's best to play with a friend, but even solo, it's fun to jump 15 feet in the air and dunk on them fools. Just don't get too far into career mode, because that's when the archaic arcade programming starts to show its age.
