I have RSG on xbla and I'm glad I never splurged for the Saturn version. The game suffers from the same problem all of treasure's games have. It's nothing but boss fights. You start the game, mow down a few waves of enemies, fight two bosses, fly through a 30 second "stage", fight four bosses, etc. I want to be able to relax and play through a level before I have to deal with a boss.

I downloaded the RSG trial from XBL and was horrified at the cleaned up visuals - it looked cheap. Maybe it looks better in other levels but it was an unpleasant surprise. It looked like a freeware Euroshmup.
I believe there is a mode that plays it in it's original resolution but I didn't see the point in paying for it seeing as I already own the original.
Having said that - best to get the XBL version first to see if you like it as it isn't a game that grabs you from the off. Well worth the money if you splurge £100 on a game you don't like.

Original resolution is impossible since the 360 can't actually output 240p. You can turn the graphics to original mode and restore the jaggies if you want to though. I can't really understand why a bit of AA and some proper transparencies "cheapens" the graphics, remember this is a very old game as it is.

Is it photoshop filtered then (like Capcom do with their 2D 'HD' releases) with some transparency and projectile effects thrown in to sweeten the deal (i.e. I imagine the weapons/projectiles will be done with the transparencies etc?). I presumed it was actually being redrawn from the ground up...?

The Capcom re-releases look like trodden-in dog shit.

Dear lord no it's worlds apart from the terrible filters Capcom have been using. Basically they anti-aliased the graphics and fixed the transparencies/alpha blending. Sprites were redrawn in HD but I believe the 3D assets were just anti-aliased and postprocessed.

I only had a quick look at it - but I thought it looked awful - totally charm free - it certainly put me off buying the game for a cleaner image and the convenience of having it on the 360.
Thanks for the pedantry re 240. I thought I didn't have to explain that. There's an original mode. Sheesh. 640x480 is as low as a 360 can go afaik.
I would guess that games like Ikuraga or Rez would benefit, but for some reason RSG (albeit the trial version) just didn't look right. Having said that- I'm not sold on the 360 mode of Mushi Futari either - it looks pretty lush - but I prefer the arcade version. Maybe I'm just weird.

Same thing happened with me on the XBLA version of Scramble. They destroyed it. The whole charm of the game was the primitive graphics.

Scramble and Mushi are different though as they are predominantly sprite based. I'm not much for the jaggy "charm" of early 3D titles vs. some cleaned up and anti-aliased polygons if I have the choice, especially on a HDTV, but of course tastes vary.

That's a fair point there buckoa51......maybe I just prefer sprite based games.
I'm not a fan of early 3D either on the whole -but there's something about RSG on Saturn that I prefer....maybe I'm just trying to justify the price to myself sub-consciously... though I "only" paid £50 for my copy in the late 90s. Looking back I was really lucky - I just rang a shop called "Another World" I saw in a magazine and asked if they had it. The guy looked around said "yeah, we have one here" - and sold it to me off the shelf.....
I actually liked the upgrade of Scramble on XBL - though I'd prefer to be able to choose between classic and redux graphics.

I like Scramble on Gameboy Advanced. When it came out it was quality retro on a small scale. And if your wondring... It comes on "Konami Arcade Classics" for GBA aka "Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced" as it was known in Japan for GBA.

Do you think Darius Gaiden would reach RSG status?

Do you think Darius Gaiden would reach RSG status? Thats an interesting comparison to make but I say no. Radiant Silvergun has always had the aura around it, since release. Very unique shooter. Not for everyone. Ikaruga its follow up is also like it. I don't love those 2 games but admit they are very unique. I like my shooters more like Gaiden and Layer Section. Gaiden is a good release and great that we got it here in the west, but there are so many shooters in its class on the Saturn alone. RSG I think stands out for not just its varied gameplay but its incredible graphical tricks that the developers pulled off. Of the two bigger shooters we got in the west for Saturn, I prefer Galactic Attack/Layer Section to Darius Gaiden. But that is mainly because im a vertical/tate guy myself.

The fact that RSG is a Treasure game adds value too. I don't think it's a rare game - just it's in demand.
The Saturn disc was the only way to legally play it apart from a cabinet for a long time too. I was surprised it held its value when the XBL version was published. It is genuinely a collector's item now as a mint condition copy could pay for a used 360 and a downloaded copy of the game.
