Need help with picture problem. im a old school gamer. im 40 years old and love sega saturn. havent had a saturn for 10 years but now i got a almost new one from amazon uk. its a pal machine model 2 machine.i have tested it on 3 lcd tvs all top end tvs one sony one philips and one samsung . have the same problem on all. i have the original scart with a screw and only 10 pins and i have also a 3 brand cabel 21 pins scart both have the same problem. dont know how to explaine because im from sweden and my english is not good, (sorry for that). but i have som kind of double picture. it goes to the right like light ghost lines. i found a video that shows my problem www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpbR-__mdcQif you look from 12 sec in the video u see the problem of same kind i have. its there in all games and menus is this a faulty sega saturn ??, or is this the way it looks on a hd tv when it tries to scale 240p signal to 576i that i have in sweden. please give me som feedback. im mad and sad. i have over 70 games and last time i had a saturn i used a crt tv. thanks for a fantastic forum. sorry for bad spelling thanks... Nicke

Basically all bets are off when you connect directly to a HDTV. I'd say that picture was pretty good considering.
If you're not satisfied your options are a CRT or an XRGB of some kind.

If all your cables do this, then either you are using a NTSC machine (they need special cables), or something is broken inside your Saturn and it can't output the rgb switch voltage.

That's not his video though, it's just indicative of the ghosting I believe was what he was trying to say.

it is not my video i just found one, that had the same promlem 13 sec in the video. do all composite cabels have som kind of ghosting and off sync picture.
i have pal machine model 2. i can order a new one if u guys dont think my problem is normal, but i love this sega saturn its allmost brand new. very rare good condition. cant someone test this. connect your sega saturn to a lct tv. turn upp brithness and sharpness a litte bit ,that do you can easily see my kind of problem more easy. i can mask it some by reducing brithness and sharpness to 0 .
its easy to see if i have it to. if u guys have the same its ok to live with. smile
and dont use a scart that have prober scart signal because i dont now if my 2 scarts are composite to scart or real scart with rgb signal.
thanks all for so fast response

Look around the edges of text on the screen, do you see any dot-crawl type effects? If so, it's a composite picture rather than RGB.

hey buckoa. I have dots so I guess its composite picture
I've added a pic on my 1 (opening) post can you check it? is that a normal picture from composite on LCD screen. thanks for all the help
I want this to be a normal effect of lcd screens bad upscaling function but I'm scared my Sega Saturn is faulty.

If it does that, then either the machine is not producing the RGB switching voltage, or the Scart cable has a contact error and doesn't receive that switching voltage (it is easy to accidentally short circuit it if you tinker around the pins too much). Or, the cable has numerous contact errors and someone switched it to produce composite video only cause that particular cable didn't have errors.
However since two different cables do that, then either the machine has the pin blown, or your TV doesn't support RGB in its scart inputs (some TVs only support RGB over one specific scart input).
Additionally you could also try temporarily disconnecting pin 16 on the scart cable, that way it will have to display composite no matter what - if the picture quality is the exact same, then your problem is that you are getting composite signal.

Looks kinda blurry I have to say, but hard to tell, LCD screens are not kind to retro.

okej thanks for all info. but my main problem is. u all say rgb fix this and if its composite it does this. is that the answer??. beacause i can live with ghosting and picture not in sync picture, but if u look at the picture i have. ok its blurry but lock att the word settings. u can clearly se that its double . the picture is off sync it goes to the right creation som kind of double lines besind the original line. its like if u take 2 identical pictures and put them ontop of eachother and do not center it correct. this must be a faulty saturn. i have today got a scart that gives rgb piture and its still there on all my 3 tvs (lcd) ive tested it on. if u sitting close u see it so easy . it is most visible with white thin lines then i can see double lines to the right- but its there all over the screen all the time. so hard to explane .. its there in all games and in all of my menus. i know sega dosent like lcd but i guess someone else out there is gamining on a lcd and not crt. cant u check if u have the same issue.
u all are fantastic in here. u give me advice and u are all so polite. så thank u so much all. i love to be here in the saturn family. im a oldscool gamer, been playing games för over 25 years. and saturn is still in my eyes the best home gaming consol. thats why this problem is so big for me. because i have money buy another saturn, but if this is normal on lcd screens i live with that, i just hope someone could test to see if u have this on your saturn on your lcd tv, sorry for my bad spelling and english but i try my best.

I can't get to the SCART sockets on my TV to test it but really I wouldn't sweat things like that with that kind of setup, a little ghosting is the least of your worries really. Why not try and find a CRT to test it on see if you still see the ghosting effect?
Just seen your pictures, if you're not seeing dot crawl or other composite artifacts, could quite easily be deinterlacing ghosting.

Oh also, are you cranking up the sharpness or anything silly like that? Correct setting for sharpness is usually 0 or 1.
