The arcade scene's greater than ever - especially if you like Time Crisis!

Finally got the game and... it's fun as hell! (Thanks to everyone who recommended it.)
I even love the way it handles. (Granted, I played on easy so the AI is more forgiving.) I don't know what is it, but Sega had the arcade racer locked down back in 1995/1997. Even this, a "subpar" game by all accounts, turns out being highly enjoyable. The graphics, frame rate and draw distance aren't even an issue for me. I expected so much worse. Daytona CCE, Sega Rally Plus, Manx and now Sega Touring Car: I just love how these games handle with the Saturn analog pad, just pure fun.
P.S. To enhance the experience, will lowering the sound of the engine etc. be a good way to be able to actually hear the soundtrack? Because as it was, I couldn't hear the "Sega Sound" OST at all while playing.
P.P.S. Which car do you guys use and, if so, how do you tune it so it handles/races the best?

Toyota all the way, but the other cars are fine really once you get fully used to them and the game. Use one that feels good to you. As for tuning the cars, don't even worry about that side! Learn how to drive your car so you can push it more and more while mastering the courses. A good driver makes for a faster car too. You can completely finish both versions of the game in stock rides. Use Manual if possible, most Sega Racers reward players sometimes with faster cars for using manual and I'm sure Sega Tiring cars is one of those. Not only that you have full control over the car and you can dump the gears to get lower speeds instead on using the breaks and slowing too much.

It is a game I want to like but must admit I am struggling to, reading this thread makes me think I will give it another go....

There is a PC version out there but as for it being any good it's hard to say for lack of playing it... I picked it up not so long back but kinda switched it off not long after running it... Max res the PC version runs at is 640x480 and looked to be 30fps from what little I got out of the car trying all keys on the keyboard to make it move ha! Much like looking at the Saturn version any way, even with the highest texture setting. As for the controls, it wouldn't pick up my 6 button Megadrive pad at all which is what I normally have plugged in. As it's an old title and while I do have one, (it's being bothered to dig it out...) it supports the Microsoft Sidewinder pad. The thing is, this game is best played with analog controls any way. If anyone want's me to dig the pad out and give it another go I will. I have the game running on XP any way. It's the "FAIR GAME" release. One good thing, the CD music was streaming off the CD which was nice! Something PC Sega Rally 2 doesn't do when running on anything above Win98. Fair Game version supported PC OS on the back cover: 95, 98, ME, XP However Win 3.1 and 2000 are crossed out. Manual is HTML on the disc or rather gets install along side. 30MB full install. Runs fine on my crusty old Geforce 6600GT I just need to be arsed to have another look at it.

The Arcade game was at Heide Park I did a 2:43 on the championship. Is there SOMEWHERE a world record table? Its so strange - nobody I know of has got this time. I look everywhere, youtube and internet and just no one got this. The best I found on youtube is a 2:45. Is my 2:43 really THAT good?? Damn if I would've known it, then it seems it would've been a good idea to record this somehow .. And a 2:43 done on the arcade machine is sure more worthy than a pc game record, isnt it? I agree that the last track the hairpin should be done via full throttle against the wall, but I disagree with any other turns. At every other turn this would be slower. Just do the hairpin this way. And I use automatic transmission. I think with manual transmission the hairpin can be done via shifting to a very low gear and would be sure even faster than crashing into wall then. But I'm bad at manual transmission with this game. The most people do one big mistake: drifting hell caused by constantly heavy turning the wheel. DONT drift ! I see always people doing that. They always steer way too much degrees the steering wheel and while doing that even with a fast speed, so that the car constantly goes insane with drifting. As more you drift and slide, as more speed you lose. Avoid drifting as good as possible at all costs. and steer as less as possible to get the turn in a good line. Do the turns with slow turning of the steering wheel and turn the wheel soft! I prefer the mercedes. The toyota drifts too much. the mercedes is a good balance for better top speed than opel calibra, but without getting a problem with drift. Best would be a opel calibra handling with the performance of toyota. But so the mercedes is the best choice to me. And I have a little problem with the pc version I bought yesterday. The graphic looks even on high detail horrible. The car models look incredible low poly and the track itself as well .. Isnt it possible to have the same graphics like the arcade machine on the pc version? I'm sure the resolution would improve a little bit. There are 4 resolutions in the menu, but all are greyed out and it forces me to play on 320x240 16bit, while 640x480 16bit would be available - but due to the fact its greyed out I cant change it Funny thing is - it switches to 640x480 while the "attraction" videos are playing. I wonder where the game does save the settings? I looked in game folder, windows folder, appdata folder, registry - nothing. Just found a stcc.ini where is this at end of file: [Option] CmdLineOption= But I cant find on the whole internet any commandline options I could insert there. I could imagine that you can at least here define a resolution ..

If your playing on a Laptop then used an external VGA screen and you should be able to get 640x480. It's shite though as it looks as if your looking at the Saturn version, more pixel looking obviously on PC because it's displaying via VGA rather than RGB Scart. General rule of thumb when it comes to Sega and Automatic, your slow. Much faster times are normally done with Manual. What they might be I don't know... When it comes to Sega racing arcade machines, 99% of the Worlds best players are found in Japan 1st and foremost, later followed by China. However, I don't think Sega Tour Cars was popular in these regions, which is also true else where as people continued to play Sega Rally & Daytona USA instead. What your more than likely find is most Japanese players went from Daytona USA & Sega Rally to Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 skipping out Manx TT & Sega Touring Cars altogether. Any hope of finding any serious talk about Sega Touring Cars will more than likely be hiding in a Japanese Blog or Forum spoken in Japanese language. That's why you may find it difficult to find stuff if any does exist. Either way even if you find out your not the fastest... there is still a sense of achievement knowing you were the fastest at your local arcade and any others you may of jumped on over the years which is cool.

I could solve my problem by installing the 1.02 Patch which offers Direct3D Support.
Now I hope it will work with my G27 Wheel. Because THIS game is terrible to play with keyboard.

it works fine with steering wheel, but its really weird that I have to set the max throttle to about 75% or even less to actually reach maximum acceleration power o.o Gas Pedal reaches full right (100%) at controls settings of game, but it doesnt do full throttle ingame. I wondered about only getting 27seconds in qualifying. Then I compared keyboard full throttle and it reaches about 13500 rpm there. But gas pedal of wheel got only flat 13000 So I said to game 100% gas is at about 75% of my gas pedal - and then I finally got 13500 rpm also with wheel. So this may help some people But the controls are still bad. Its good drivable now, but its by far not that good like it was on the arcade machine wheel. And hell the fps rate is the biggest disaster about this. Why I get only goddamn 27fps?? It is locked to that strange number. The arcade machine had for sure 50 or 60fps. But THIS? 27 fps on grünwald curcuit or brickwall town is a pain in the ass its so damn choppy that it isnt not nice anymore... I NEED more FPS! What the hell is this?
