I might get some hate for this, but I never played it back in the day, The first metroidvania castlevania game I've played was Dawn of Sorrow on the DS, then I went back and played SotN... and I didn't enjoyed it too much. Every now and then I try to play it a little more to at least beat the main sstory, but I like DoS and AoS better.

I don't know why the Saturn version gets a bad rap. It's very playable, looks good and I like the music.

Never played the Saturn version, but the PS1 game is one of the best games ever.

I prefer my Castlevania to be linear if I'm honest. Super C IV on SNES and Chronicles on PS1 are my favourites. I was underwhelmed by SOTN - perhaps if I hadn't played Super Metroid before it I might have liked it more. I just couldn't motivate myself to stick with it.
I have the PAL edition for PS1 with the artbook and soundtrack CD all in excellent condition - worth quite a bit I believe. Picked it up for next to nothing in an EB years ago.

I played roughly halfway through the US PS1 version a year or two ago. I don't think you'd be missing anything with the JP version. You might need a guide to figure out what the items are though.

I've played the JP version, also about halfway through (going by the percentage the game gives, anyway), and I can't recall any dialog or anything that impeded progress. The item list can be a bit of a pain to figure out, like bradcap said, but I was able to at least figure out what shit was through trial and error.

Ditto Mick. I had the first one that was released on the GBA, the metroid-vania type. I did really enjoy it too.

I did really enjoy it too. It wasn't my first Castlevania (that was actually... Castlevania on NES!) but CV: Circle of the Moon was my first ever GBA title, back when GBA's weren't backlit. I bought it along with my GBA on release from a major HMV outlet on some famous street in London City Centre (near Hamlins and all that business). Before leaving London - as I was on vacation - I also acquired F-Zero and Bomberman plus a link up lead. That 1st Castlevania for GBA was amazing though (even though Aria of Sorrow was the best of the bunch). The music, gameplay and level designs etc were great. Apart from that level which constantly poisoned you. Ugh...

I just ordered this. Probably won't get here for a couple weeks but it's pretty good from what I played of it. The extra stuff is awesome.
