I recently bought a 3D controller for my Saturn (finally) but I don't know what I'm doing wrong, it seems to refuse to work. When I boot up the console, I can control the menus and even the action replay menus just fine, but as soon as I start a game, it stops working. Anyone knows what is going on? Is that normal? It's the second 3D controller I buy that does this, I tought my first one was broken, but there's clearly a pattern here. Thanks in advance!

Some games do not work with the 3d controller. That's why it has the analog-digital switch in the middle. If you switch it to digital, it should behave the same way as a normal controller (in theory).

Yeah and just to make sure...
The switch at the bottom must be set before you turn on or else some games may not detect it properly. + = D-pad mode and the whole thing will work like a normal 6 button Saturn pad. O = Analog mode, Thumb stick & Triggers will now work properly with supporting games.
Some games that support the 3D pads analog mode:
Duke Nukem 3D Quake Manx TT Wipe Out 2097 Dayonta USA CCE Sonic R Fighter Megamix Nights Christmas Nights Saturn Bomberman Sega Ages Vol.1 Sega Touring Cars

I did some testing here and it's still not working. Strange thing is that it actually work on the first 2 or 3 presses, then it stops. On Panzer Dragoon, I can skip the whole text on the beggining, but I can't skip the movie or do anything after that. On Saturn Bomberman I can skip the first movie and then it stops, I can't even press start anymore. On Both games I'm using it on D-Pad mode from the start. Any idea what's going on?

Remove the detachable cable from the back of the pad and clean the contacts, failing that try opening up the pad and cleaning inside.

Yeah do the cleaning first. There is a little clip just above the cable on the pad it's self where it joins the pad, what looks like a cheese block on the underside, press the small clip down and hold then pull the cheese block away from pad, the whole cheese block that's attached to the main cable will come out, (pull the block and not the cable). Make sure the contacts are clean. Check pins of the cable where it plugs into Saturn.
Failing that it might be a broken wire in the lead, try holding the pad above and below your Saturn as you test each time.

try holding the pad above and below your Saturn as you test each time. LOL. Sounds like what I had to with my leg following knee surgery back in '07: make sure the leg is raised above the heart to aid speedy recovery (R.I.C.E... etc)

Some games do not work with the 3d controller. That's why it has the analog-digital switch in the middle. If you switch it to digital, it should behave the same way as a normal controller (in theory). Even in digital mode, it uses a different communications protocol than a regular 6-button controller, but the Saturn hardware handles the difference automatically. It's only really an issue for USB converters and homebrew software that try decoding the I/O lines manually.

I know this is an old thread but I am having the same issue after just buying a used one. I'm getting a replacement sent and I can junk the one I have, but I will open it up and maybe try cleaning and see what I come up with.

Ok I got the replacement controller today and the cord works on both, so I know it's the cord. One has has 2 short prongs that must be broke in half because they are not like that on the one that works. Anyone know how I could go about fixing that? It's on the part that plugs directly to the Saturn and it doesn't have screws and I'm not sure if I should just pry it open?

Well I took it apart, since I couldn't wait to see if anyone would answer or not. Anyway it turns out 2 of the middle prongs were not actually broke, they were somehow pulled back in, so I got them to stay out as much as I could without taping or soldering or anything. It works now but the prongs are not exactly held in place and are not all the way up, but far enough to make contact now. So I ended up with 2 controllers.
