Hi everyone! Thanks in advance if anyone has any thoughts on this:
I recently hooked up my modded model 2 Saturn after a year or two... And noticed that it's having some issues. First off, certain textures seem to be not loading correctly,,, such as the car shadow on Sega Rally and Daytona, as well as the radar maps on those games and also Panzer Dragoon.
Secondly, there is a "static" sound that is occasionally happening with any game I try, even when the game is paused. Sounds similar to the static sound in between channels of an FM radio.
could this mean that I have a dying processor? fingers crossed that's not it!

So you think the power supply could cause these issues? Or are you asking what power supply is in my system? I'm sorry, I am not very experienced with repairing consoles, but I have a friend who can help me once I figure out the problem. I could snap a picture of the power supply though if you think you may be able to spot a problem?

I was just thinking that it might be your psu?? Firstly I would open up the saturn completely and remove any dust from the motherboard(both sides). Is that red wire for your modchip? If it is, try bypassing it and use a legit game and see if there is any difference. I assume you don't have a spare saturn/psu lying around to swap out? The reason why I say that it could be your psu is because my saturn was freezing mid game about 10min into play. So I replaced it with a computer pico psu since I didn't have a spare saturn psu and it fixed my problem.

Thank you so much for this input. The red wire is for the mod chip. I'm at work right now, but I will reply again tonight in more detail. Thanks again for helping me figure this out!

well my graphics / bad textures issue is constant as soon as i start playing, but my sound issues do appear to be happening after about 10 mins of play.
Zyrobs, would you agree that this could potentially be an issue with my power supply? I would love a second opinion just to be safe.
Unfortunately CJ, i'm unable to try bypassing the mod chip myself. I am a modding newbie,, and i purchased this system from a friend after it was already modded. I was able to take the lid off and clean the laser, as well as raise to cd spindle.. which fixed a previous issue i was having with the system reading games as audio CDs. My next step tonight will be cleaning both sides of the motherboard as you suggested.
I do have a friend with a soldering gun who repairs computers. My plan is to research what all of the possible issues could be, and then recruit my repair savy friend to potentially try bypasses the mod chip, and/or swap out the psu if that looks to be what's causing my problems.

polygon problems mean that something around the VDP1 is not right.
Sound hissing after 10 minutes can be a lot of things, such as power supply, bad caps, or even the modchip causing some interference.

thank you zyrobs for your input! i've been reading up on saturn power supply / bad cap issues , and now I'm off to google to research the VDP1 and related issues.
If the modchip happens to be causing some interference, are there any steps i could take to correct this? Or would that mean that the mod chip is going bad? I'm guessing that bypassing the chip would be one way to test this theory? Unfortunately I have no idea how to do this work myself.. but i'm hoping that my friend can help with repairs once i figure out the most likely solutions.
THANKS so much for your patience and for trying to help out a total newbie! On the up side, At least this issue has got me pretty interested in learning more about the internal pieces and parts that make my Saturn tick!

hi bullet33, did you fix your problem? I go the same problem. the thing is, what I did to fix it was replace the whole power supply board and that fixed the audo problem, a loud static noise when playing audio. But now this replacement power supply is going bad I think. I'm at a lost. maybe I have to replace the fuse or something. sometimes this won't even play audio.

Solved!
I ended up having to send my system to a professional, but he was able to find what was causing my problems and fix it. My problem consisted of two things, a faulty connection to the mod chip as well as solder on the CDROM control board. After cleaning the control board, as well as cleaning and reflowing the connection to the mod chip, my system was repaired!
Just to note though, Before the repair, Not only was i getting a static sound through the tv, but my console was also freezing up after about 10mins of play.
And as for my "bad textures" problem,,, after more research i discovered that it had to do with using "S-video". Certain games use dithering which looks fine on a CRT TV with composite cables,, but when you use and new LCD TV along with S-Video, certain textures on some games become "cross-hatches" and look distorted.

glad to hear that, mines seems tobe the 4 in 1 cart, everytime i have it in the slot the static audio acts, but when I don't have it in, it doesn't happen, I have to blow and insert it just right then it's okay, maybe it's my modchip.

It could also be your cartridge port. My repair guy also said mine was faulty, and he fixed the mis-aligned pins in the system and now cartridges work for me again

I seem to be getting some static pop in my SS audio especially on Lunar 2 Eternal Blue. It's been years since I last played this but I don't remember getting that "pop" the last time I played this game.
It's a japanese white SS using a step down converter. Think I may need a new SS ?
