About time I introduced myself.

Hello. I am Yart, and you've probably seen me around these forums a few times. Only now have I decided to properly introduce myself. Terribly sorry for the wait.
Here's the basic rundown. I'm still in high school for an extra 13th year (lacked the required amount of credits to graduate. I'm a lousy and lazy student) and as a career I want to get into video game programming/making/directing/whatever. I actually want to make a company down the road, potentially even put out a (cartridge based) console... you know, stuff I've been dreaming since I was just a kid. (Actually, before I was even in school. It's my lifelong dream) Sounds sorta silly now though that I've grown up a bit, but eh. One can dream. However I do program a game from time to time using Game Maker version 5.3A (the good version that runs on a Pentium 166 smoothly), and only the scripting part of it without the trashy drag and drop stuff. I'd love to learn C++. (Actually, I plan on doing a Dreamcast homebrew in the future. Anyone interested?) I also like to fix computers and all that jazz. Not very good with electronics themselves, but eh. I'm learning.
Other miscellaneous stuff I could mention is that I like techno music, maybe some metal music too... oh and I love cats...oh and guns! Those are fun! (I grew up on Duck Hunt. ) Other than that... eh... I guess I could say that I'm some guy living in Ontario, Canada. (Another words, I use NTSC and I'm confused whenever someone doesn't give a price in Canadian or even American dollars. )
Favourite game genre would have to be the wonderful Scrolling Shooter, or "shmups", hands down. I absolutely love Scrolling Shooters, especially the Bullet Hell variant. (Not very good at them though, but as long as I have fun, right?) Actually, I'm itching for my Playstation 2 mod to come in so I can play Mushihimesama, a bullet hell shmup I got for my birthday. Too bad it's a Japanese import, otherwise I'd be playing it right now. (Dang region locks!) I also like action packed sidescrollers. I just don't have the patience for a slow paced Role Playing Game (especially not take turn) or even sports games. (Unless it's an old arcadish style unrealistic one like Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, or even NBA Hangtime. Those are hecka fun!) Racing games aren't exactly my cup of tea, but I DO love unrealistic racing games. Ones with crazily unrealistic physics that allow a quick play while giving you a massive addrenaline rush. Unfortunately my attention span for video gaming is only about 30 minutes before I get bored, no matter what game it is, so I much prefer arcade games over console games since they take less time to beat. (And are generally much more fun anyways)
Basically my top seven favourite games have to be:
1. DoDonPachi (Arcade)
Haven't tried the Sega Saturn version yet, but I absolutely love this game. I'm rather poor at it though. My record was five continues on the first loop, bombing maybe only about 3 or so times throughout the course of the game. Dang that second loop! It's so dang hard to get!
2. Metal Slug 5 (Arcade)
What can I say? Sure it was made after the fall of SNK before they were picked up by Playmore, and sure the attention to detail wasn't half as much as the glorious Metal Slug 3, but overall the atmosphere, vehicles, levels, and soundtrack of Metal Slug 5, in my opinion, is way better than any of the other Metal Slug games. I loved this game so much that I used to play it all the time, beating the hardest difficulty level in under 3 continues.
3. Ys (Series)
The perfect overhead RPG series for me. While it is filled with story, it NEVER overbalances the crazy amounts of gameplay this game has to offer. It's quick, battles are never close to boring, the music is the best freaking music in any video game, ever, and... blagh! I love the Ys series, especially the third one for the Sega Genesis (our name for the Sega Megadrive. Welcome to North America!).
4. Rocket Knight Adventures (Megadrive/Genesis)
Absolutely captivating. The characters have that certain charm to them, and their very fluent animations only helps. Even the backdrops and scenery is amazing. Not only that but I found the game to be extremely fun, and found it to be one of the best games ever in the gameplay department. Besides, who can overlook an opposum in knight's armor with a jetpack? That alone is friggin' awesome enough!
Note: I am not a fan of the sequels.
5. Gradius (Series)
I suck horribly at these games. I can rarely pass the first level of any of them, yet I find them oddly addicting. (Remember! I grew up on the sissy Playstation. The machine aimed towards crappy casual gamers) I just keep coming back to them, determined to beat those danged first levels! When I heard Gradius III and IV were released on the Playstation 2, on the same day I found out I actually grabbed everyone in the family, threw them all in the car and told them to drive me to the mall (which was on the other side of the city), 15 minutes before closing time. We made it there in 10, going through yellow lights and everything. We gunned it for Gradius, only to come home so I could die on the first level some more!
6. Waku Waku 7 (Neo-Geo)
Need I say more? Best fighting game, ever.
7. Silpheed (First two of the series; DOS and Sega CD (or Mega CD))
I've grown up on Silpheed for DOS since... I dunno... before I could talk? Probably explains my taste in games nowadays. I've always loved these games, especially their soundtracks. While I was a fan of the 3Dness of the games at the times, I really don't care anymore. Nonetheless, they're still very fun! (The Playstation 2 Silpheed (which I own a copy of) is a disgrace to the series! That, and Project Sylpheed, which recently came out for the Xbox 360... heck that one ain't even a shmup!)
Besides that, we've owned a fair number of consoles in our household:
-Atari 2600 (About 5 of them)
-Coleco Vision (About 3. Fourth is broken)
-Nintendo Entertainment System (2 of them)
-Super Nintendo Entertainment System
-Nintendo 64
-Nintendo Gamecube
-Nintendo Wii
-Nintendo Virtual Boy ( Broken)
-Nintendo Gameboy (and later Gameboy Advance SP)
-TurboGrafx-16 ( Broken)
-Sega Gamegear
-Sega Genesis (North American Sega Megadrive)
-Sega Dreamcast (We went through 5 of them, all of them broke.)
-Sega Saturn (NOW I own one. )
-Sony Playstation (And Playstation 2 (One's laser died))
-Microsoft Xbox (Our second one. Other broke)
-Nokia N-Gage QD (Believe it or not but this is my favourite handheld! I use it everyday and not only for gaming either! Heck, it's even my alarm clock!)
While it's great that we've got all of those, :/ I'm lacking good games for them. Oh well. (We have maybe no more than 15 games for each system, only 3 or so for some)
Oh yeah... and we got over 20 computers in the basement. Nothing over a Pentium 100. Hah! Oh well. Still VERY fun to hook up for a nice, great big Duke Nukem 3D LAN party. Or even Descent! Heck! Why not some Doom while we're at it too?
Out of all of those though, I love my Sega Saturn the most. It's just so much fun! Though my second favourite has to be either the Coleco Vision, or Atari 2600.
(Consoles I'm looking at getting now are: A PC-Engine Duo thingy (not sure what the actual name is), Atari Jaguar (call me crazy if you will), Neo-Geo Advanced Entertainment System, Nintendo DS, Sega CD and maybe Sega 32X just for Metal Head (I'm the only person on Earth who loves that game!))
Oh yeah. Since this is a Sega Saturn related forum, I might as well list off the games I got for my system. (I picked up my system for only around $30-40 with 13 games and a controller. I did buy a second controller though later on)
-Bust-A-Move 2
-Three Dirty Dwarves
-Croc
-Magic Carpet
-Road Rash
-Street Fighter: The Movie
-Sonic 3D Blast
-Bug!
-Bug Too!
-Ten Pin Alley
-NBA Live 97
-NBA Action
-College Slam
I only really like the first five games in the list, but the price was cheap, so I ain't complaining. Besides, the crappy games make fine boot discs for playing backups with the Swap Trick. If they break, no loss! (Though I only use College Slam for the Swap Trick. The others atleast have some value to them)
Basically the other Saturn games I've tried out are:
-Radiant Silvergun (Overrated game in my opinion)
-Cotton 2 (Pretty fun!)
-Bulk Slash (Instant win! Reminds me of Megaman Legends mixed with Armor Core, only faster paced)
Well, I should stop typing and head to bed. I'm sure you'll see more of me around the boards. This place is great. I'm very happy to be here. I'd like to thank the people who made this place just for making this place. It is indeed very awesome, and an excellent tribute to some of the best of gaming in history!
I'll see you guys around.
