Your not alone dtss, I too respect Nights into Dreams from a far for it's great artwork, fancy effects and lighting as a Saturn game but as a game to play it makes me feel as if I'm doing grannies knitting for some reason.... The only time I enjoyed Nights was when it was part of a totally different game, when it was part of Sega's Superstars Tennis which incidentally did put a smile on me face, (XBOX360/PS3/Wii ect...).

Nooooo! Just kidding, its not a game for everyone but there are times when I play it and consider it the best experience of the 32 bit era despite me loving other genres. It just hits me at every level with the music, the point combo-ing, the graphics, the story, the feel with the controller. I can understand how you're feeling...... Probably the same way I felt when I read "Sega Rally" earlier in this thread. Haha. Ha ya, Ive heard this opinion on Nights before. It was perfect for the Saturn for all age groups back then. Not for everyone. As for Sega Rally, yeah, but I should note that I like the game alot, I just always thought of it as a sports game. You know that sports game stigma. I love the genre but I almost feel weird rating them higher than RPGs, shooters etc. Its a completely irrational way of thinking its just always how I rate Sega Rally.

I notice there are alot of Nights fans who think of it more as a racing game Im a bit more on the defensive for Nights because Ive gotten back into in a hardcore way just in the last week. Ive been Ace-ing all the tracks again and trying to out-do my previous scores. The story , soundtrack and ending tear me up every time. Im not afraid to admit that. Its probably the best all around Saturn experience as far as hitting me emotionally and as far as fluidity of controls in a game goes.

While I've always enjoyed the score-attack gameplay, I find the story and music really touching. For me, it's what makes the game so special.

Struggling to enjoy Pandemonium. I like the graphics but getting annoyed with constantly dying through the need to jump perfectly on enemies, and having to go back to the start. I think I might just be shite at platformers! No, Pandemonium! is just exceptionally hard. Mind you, that's one of the reasons why I personally think it's great. But it is really, really hard.

For me as well. I think what makes them work so well is the absence of dialogue. Conveying a story without words isn't always possible and is never easy, but as a rule video game developers excel at animation, not dialogue, so the choice of presentation really played to Sonic Team's strengths. With no awkward dialogue or bad voice acting to break the spell, the cutscenes in Nights Into Dreams are just magic.

Nights. I can really appreciate how fantastic it looks but I just don't enjoy playing it. approach it like a contest game where it's all about the score at first. when I found that out, then I started to really enjoy. also absolute hammer perfect controls, I remember something like 14 years ago a few friends visited me while I was playing nights, they started laughing somewhat at how it looked and then I have one of them the 3d pad and within a few minutes he was like, wow this plays great! me personally I love the wholte atmosphere, music and the incredible pion-mode where you could change the songs by acting in certain ways among these pions. I mean this was 1996!!! I don't think many games could still accomplish that

Just to touch more on what bultje112 said, I never knew the Nightopians had an entire AI (or A-LIFE) system to their own. How deep is that! Naka created an entire layer to the game that most people probably never even knew about. It wasnt until I read the official strategy guide recently that I knew how expansive the A-Life system is. I always wondered why the music changed in some levels.

It allows the player to fill in the information. It's also why, in my opinion, Journey of Dreams wasn't as well received. Sure, people complain about the lack of score attack in the levels, which is certainly issue, but my main issue with the game is that the developers forced bad dialogue and story down my throat when they did it so much better without this in the original game (I know the team had changed by 2007, but still).

Journey of Dreams' soundtrack is wonderful, definitely the best element of the game, adding much needed charm. Another popular game I don't enjoy is Athlete Kings. I mean, what's so fun about pressing buttons really fast to overcome your enemies? Sure, it looks like a good port, but that's the only thing that's good about it.

I feel the original Nights is complete and polished. They did what they set out to do with it. Maybe think of it more like Panzer Dragoon 1. Its great but the sequel added so much more. Nights is a 2.5 D score attack/racing type game with some added replay value as well. Had they made a Nights 2 Im sure they would have tweaked and expanded upon just about everything. However I loved that Yuji Naka ended up doing Burning Rangers next, so much variety with those 2 games for the Saturn.

I couldn't get into Nights for years, then something just clicked and it flew from totally off the radar into my top 10 games for the system. It really is worth persevering with.

You people are a bunch of savages! haha, just kidding. I have games I didn't like but others did but I don't know if they were popular. Pretty much all of the popular games that everyone has mentioned were all enjoyable for me or I haven't played yet.
The two games I have reviewed that I got a lot of, "You just don't know what you're doing" or "You're wrong" was Crimewave and Crusader No Remorse. Didn't care for either game but I dunno if that fits the category of popular or not.
I haven't reviewed Astal but I will this year. I enjoyed Steep Slope Sliders but my main criticism was the complete lack of content. I enjoyed NiGHTS with what little I have played, I enjoyed Manx TT, I thoroughly enjoyed Guardian Heroes so much I got the HD version on Xbox 360 along with Radiant Silvergun, I enjoyed VF2 and I LOVED Fighters Megamix.
How about Burning Rangers? People seem to have a beef with that game. I might review it this year too if I get time.
