What are your favourite game genres (you can select up to three options)?
What is it about the genre that you love? What are some of your favourite games in the genre?

What about Fighting games? Fighting/Sports/Arcade games would be my picks.

That's what the "beat 'em up" categories are for.

That's what the "beat 'em up" categories are for. Fighting games and Beat 'em' ups are Two completely different genre of game. A Beat 'em'Up is Guardian Heroes, D & D Collection, Die Hard Arcade e.t.c while Fighting games (a.k.a VS Fighting) are games like Virtua Fighter, Streetfighter e.t.c I would have voted Run'n'Gun but you didn't include that category so my vote will probably go to Fighting games and Beat 'em' ups. Will consider the 3rd choice. BtW What's World Building? Never heard of that genre before. Would this be something like simulation games e.g Theme Park?

I agree there absolutely has to be a Fighting genre. If there were only 5 on the entire list youd have to still have it.
However I answered the poll as I would have as a kid in the mid-late 90s.
- First person shooter - Survival Horror - Vertical Shooter
It was tough choice for 3rd as I loved light gun as well but took vert shooter for the variety.
I wouldnt answer the same way now for a few reasons. FPS back then was more of a genre you played because it was an FPS. Now everything is an FPS so it lost a bit of that. Survival Horror barely exists in its true form from the late 90s early 2000s anymore. Vert shmups never really changed though.
My answer now in 2015 would likely be different. Like I said the wonder years of going nuts over Doom, Duke, Quake, Shadow Warrior, Powerslave arent there for the FPS genre. If anything ive gotten more in RPGs (which I hate back then) since playing PDS, Shining Force 3, Shining Holy Ark etc.

JRPGs, Action Adventures, and 2D beat em ups. Also, what is the difference between a 2D beat em up and scrolling beat em up? I'm blanking on thinking of 2D beat em ups that aren't scrollers.
Also, fighting games are not beat em ups. Definitely two different things.

Hence the different categories of Beat 'em ups. 2D and 3D are obviously your one-on-one fighters, while Scrolling Beat'em Up refers to games like Guardian Heroes, Double Dragon, etc. Run'n'Gun would probably fall under action or arcade. The list of genres would be endless if I listed every minutae. World Building includes things like Sim City, Theme Park, etc.

Never once heard anyone refer to Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter/Virtua Fighter as "beat em ups" They're just not. They're fighting games. Beat em ups are Die Hard Arcade/Batman Forever Arcade/Guardian Heroes etc. And while there are 3D and 2D fighters on the Saturn I personally wouldn't split the two catergories as at the end of the day they are both the same genre which is Fighting.

Fair enough, I can see the thing about VS Fighting - it was even on many of the Japanese fighting games, like XMen Vs SF. If one of the mods would like to adjust the poll to reflect this terminology, then please do so - I'm unable to do that, strangely.

Racing games for me. The current racing games have too many options, cars, tracks, way too many choices. My preference goes to arcade racing games.

While I agree that fighting games and beat 'em ups are two separate genres, referring to fighting games as "beat 'em ups" is definitely not unprecedented. I've seen it done more than once in professional gaming magazines from the Saturn era. It might be a regional thing, but it has been done, and it's far from the craziest genre lumping that's happened (how'd you like professional gaming journalists referring to point-and-click adventure games as RPGs? ), since in essence a fighting game isn't much different from the boss battles in a beat 'em up. In early fighting games like the original Fatal Fury the line between the genres is particularly blurred.

And in response to the thread topic: Awwwwwwww!!! But I love all of them! (Except for racing and sports, and even those two I'm not particularly opposed to.) Oh well, I'll vote anyway. Role-playing games has to get a vote; that is the one and only point of which I am certain. I have had a mad enthusiasm for RPGs for most of my life, can derive enjoyment from even some of the worst examples of the genre, and to this day look to RPGs as my go-to genre when I'm not in the mood to play anything else. Rail shooters need a vote, and I'm particularly enthusiastic about this genre in the context of the Saturn, since it includes Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon II, and to an extent Solar Eclipse (the game has a fixed flight course but isn't truly on-rails). Plus, I like it when a game's experience is to a large extent guaranteed rather than being reliant on your own performance. By controlling where the player character goes, rail shooters can provide a more cinematic and structured experience than most games. My third vote goes to world building, partially inspired by Derek's decision to go by what his answer would have been back in the mid-90s. I haven't stumbled upon a world building game to get me excited in a number of years now, but back then I was obsessed with Civilization II (really wish there was an easy way to play this one on modern systems) and Sim City 2000. Had no idea that Sim City 2000 made it to the Saturn back in the day, but nowadays I have fun with that version, although I still haven't figured out how to get the save function to work. Plus there's The Horde, which also includes action/adventure and strategy elements, but the world building features alone are reasonably compelling.

RTS > Action/Adventure > 2d Platformer. RTS just because I can't put moba. I like online/multiplayer games because they're really deep and always offer something new.
