Has anybody played this? There are literally no reviews on YouTube. I've had it in the back of my mind for a while as it looks interesting enough (It looks like a Zelda clone, and I like Zelda). I have literally just had a blast on the Megadrive original right now for the first time and it is really good. So far it has the potential to be the best 2D Zelda game But yeah, how is the sequel? Is it disappointing, fun, amazing, etc? Could be one to keep an eye out for.

It's mixed. It's much harder than the original game, at least in terms of the puzzles and platforming, and you're required to make a few "leaps of faith" in order to progress. I found it a bit frustrating, and the soundtrack is rather dull and emotionless, but there are folks who love the game to death and I can see why. If nothing else, the animation is gorgeous. I still remember how stunned I was when I saw how fluidly everything moves in the game.
If you're really into Zelda-likes, it's well worth a look. Just don't expect it to be a generational leap over the original Story of Thor. (As an aside, the game is actually less story-driven than the original, curiously enough.)

The game looks beautiful and indeed plays like a classic Zelda game. The soundtrack is very average but the game plays well. The puzzles are quite challenging and the world of Oasis has some unique concepts. The story is almost non existent though, which is a shame given the intriguing world. Not Top 10 material but worth checking out if you like action RPGs and challenging puzzles.

I completed it but without using a guide I wouldn't have got anywhere in the game.

I am actually playing this currently. I like it a lot so far. It reminds me of Secret of Mana with some platforming. I really like the art, graphics, and combat and am at the third temple (Earth) at the moment. There are times when I feel the game could use some more meat on the bones and better music, which is crazy because it was composed by Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Maximum Tune, Actraiser, and many other great games)! I was soo stoked when I saw his name on the title screen and thought I was going to find a new soundtrack to my phones music list... So far, that is my biggest gripe. As stated before, there are a lot of jumps of faith in the game. The most I have seen in a game for a long time, lol. I haven't had to turn to a guide yet, but if you have a long game backlog you might have to do it. The earth temple is taking a little longer than expected, so I may end up doing this. I'm glad I have this game in my collection (albeit no case or manual... thanks previous owner(s) and I feel like it rounds my collection out pretty well.

Both are one of those games you have to play the once as a Sega Fan and that's final. Just don't expect a long lasting challenge. Like the first game on MD it's all too easy to complete and both can be done in one sitting if you have played similar games before. You only need half a brain any way. There used to be a saying back in the day, an easy game was viewed as a good game in Japan... If it was more testing and maybe bigger it would be in my collection today sitting proud next to Lanstalker (MD). Once your done though and enjoy them you will regardless of being easy, check out Lanstalker on MD.

Do i need to play the first part of SoT to understand the Story of part 2? According to Wikipedia Story of Thor 2 (Legend of Oasis) is a prequel to Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) so you're probably going to be fine having not played it. You can pick up Beyond Oasis cheap on Steam though and it's a good little game, been playing it myself but as I said it's technically a sequel.

Anyone played the Japanese version of this game, and is it playable for a non-Japanese speaker? The NTSC version is a bit high-priced for my liking, but I do like how this game looks and I am a fan of similar games.

Unless you use a guide, you won't be able to understand what you need to do, where you need to go next, etc.

Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor is on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (NTSC) & Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (PAL) for XBOX360 & PS3. In PAL Land all MD games are the Sega Genesis versions and they all run @ 60hz.

Frankly, the game is complicated enough in terms of its map design that you might need a guide if you played it in english, too! But definitely if you don't speak japanese and have a JP copy, you won't understand the prompts about where to go next, descriptions of the weapons, etc. But it's all doable with faqs!

Also, as I recall the games are set in the same milieu but don't have any real plot continuity between them. It's more of a parallel plot deal: after a few centuries the magic bracelets appear again, the evil god threatens to rise again, and a brave hero appears to set everything right again. The connection is more like Phantasy Star/Phantasy Star II than Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance/Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
