Well, this post has two parts to it really. The first is to query whether this seems legit. It looks different to other auctions I have seen, so not sure if this is just something the guy has knocked together or something. I know very little about Japanese games, so excuse my lack of knowledge. I wanna grab a Japanese game and Castlevania is a tad too expensive at the moment, so this seems like a good option because Treasure has some decent games. www.ebay.es/itm/SILHOUETTE-MIRAGE-SEGA-SATURN-NTSC-JAPAN-COMPLETO-EN-MUY-BUEN-ESTADO-/281851235966?hash=item419fa48e7e:g:MXsAAOSw~bFWPzw7The second part is just to query how the game is. Is it a decent game? I have looked into the mechanics and I don't really get it. It seems as if one direction you take off health, and the other takes off will to fight. Surely it would make more sense to go straight for the kill and constantly stick to that direction? And that leads me to my next concern. Treasure games are notorious for having interesting mechanics. How hard is it to pick up, with the game being in Japanese? It took me ages to 'get' Mischief Makers without a manual, and that game is in English! Any feedback on it would be great! Thanks!

It looks legit to me, but I assume eBay will refund you if it's dodgy. It's a Saturn Collection "Satakore" edition which was the budget rerelease like the PlayStation Platinum games. I've not played the game but have been curious. There's reviews of it on YouTube, maybe try those?

There are surprisingly few reviews. There's one Saturn review and the others are for the PS version, which was changed a lot in localisation (apparently) and is also in English, so wouldn't cover some of the points. I have had a look at the English tutorial section from the Playstation version, and it looks pretty complicated with a lot to remember. Hopefully it has the same tutorial area and maybe I can watch the English video and copy until I remember everything It's a very pretty game though, perhaps one of the best looking 2D games I've seen. Perhaps Vampire Savior is a little better, but I'll have to withhold judgement until I actually see both on screen. YT is hardly reliable for judging quality.

There's a tutorial in the Saturn version too. Even though it's in Japanese, I didn't find it too difficult to infer what they were trying to get me to do, although I remember one particular part taking a little more effort to decipher.
I think it's a great game, but it apparently doesn't click for quite a few people. If you're familiar with Ikaruga, the polarity gimmick in this game is basically the precursor to that. Enemies of both polarities are thrown at you, so it's up to you to position yourself correctly to defend against certain enemies and damage others. Blasting an enemy when you're facing the "wrong" direction will weaken them and make them easier to defeat, but beyond that you'll want to keep enemies around long enough to beat money out of them (for purchasing upgrades) using melee attacks rather than disposing with them in haste. Bosses also often have both polarities.
You'll find a number of FAQs out there detailing the mechanics, but be aware that most are geared toward the PS version which has a few drastic gameplay changes; namely that weapon use drains your spirit meter. In the Saturn version, you can basically shoot as much as you want.

Sounds interesting. Thanks for that. Mischief Makers took a while to click, so this may end up being the same. I played that game for so long thinking 'I don't understand any of this', but later it became one of my favourite N64 games. I may grab it. Could be a good first Japanese purchase

I'm personally a big fan of Silhouette Mirage. The setting and characters are unique and quirky, it's tons of fun to play, and it does lots of interesting things with its central concept of polarity, even if I think Ikaruga was probably on the whole a better implementation of a similar idea. It admittedly has a relatively steep learning curve control scheme wise, and I could see that turning some people off to begin with, but once you've grasped the controls you have such a wide palette of actions available at your disposal that the game becomes super-cool. It reminds me a lot of Alien Soldier on the Mega Drive (also by Treasure, unsurprisingly!) in that regard, which I initially found very tough to get to grips with, but went on to absolutely love once I became familiar with the complex collection of actions mapped to the Mega Drive's three buttons. As for any potential language issues, while I speak Japanese and couldn't say for sure, I think that most of the learning curve in the game is from the controls and gameplay mechanics rather than anything else, and wouldn't expect the language barrier to be too high, particularly with, as you say, videos of the English language version to refer to in any moments of difficulty. Definitely worth a go I'd say, particularly if you like other Treasure games!

The only issue I really had with the language barrier is that there's a point in the game where you're prompted to make a choice, and I have no clue what the hell each option does.

I thought it was an above average platformer. The graphics are good and the mechanics are unique.

It has super smooth controls and incredible 2d graphics, but the gimmicky gameplay makes it very difficult to enjoy the game IMO. It also has tons of boss fights.
One thing no one mentioned is that the game is WEIRD. Crazy weird. Like, you have an enemy you have to defeat during a car chase (the camera direction changes several times all in 2d), another one gets defeat because he is making so much noise in the night that the neighbours wake up and throw crap at him, there's an enemy which is a giant six-shooter gun with live people as bullets, and you have to defeat one boss by poisoning its soup (by throwing opposite colour mooks inside). And also there's a giant cat-dragon at some point.
Really the games only problem that it is too gimmicky.
I find it fun occasionally but every time I play it, halfway through the game I end up thinking "ok, I can't take this crazy game anymore".

To me that's part of its charm. I thought the 'soup boss', among others, was pretty clever.
Oddly enough, though, that's kind of how I feel about Dynamite Headdy. Every now and then I'll fire it up again and play for a while, but at some point it just becomes too damn much and I have to turn it off. Then again, maybe that's just because I find dolls/puppets/marionettes creepy as hell.
Short explanation: that's Treasure for you. Fuckin' weirdos.

Silhouette mirage is very good - a bit tough to grasp, but really interesting once you get into it. dark/light mechanics abound, and in general it's probably my favorite treasure game. But I like the weird stuff!
