These two games have a very similar feel to them (I think they're made by the same people, but I could be wrong), but which is better?
ITH seems more unique, due to it being based underwater; however, I hear the framerate is somewhat choppy. What are your guys thoughts on the two? Which plays better / is more fun? I'm drawn towards ITH, but I think Slug may be have more variation.
Also, maybe this is a false dichotomy. From what I've seen, those seem to be the only games with that kinda of style... but maybe there are others that not only do something similar, but do it better. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Metal Slug hands down! it's not even a close call. It plays better, its more fun, more action packed, memorable soundtrack, more addictive, more graphically superior and IS better. Also better in multi-player, plus there's less slow down and more variety. In The Hunt moves at snails pace even in 60hz. I also remember having to do something funny with my controller because the game wouldn't load up. I eventually got rid of it. Not memorable at all.

Always will be. In The Hunt is quite forgettable by comparison and is somewhat 'drowned out' (erm, yeah... pun intended!) by the already massive catalogue of super high-quality shooters on the Saturn. FYI, In The Hunt plays much better on the PS1 > Saturn version **Gasp!**

I'm surprised ITH is so bad. It looks really good.
And PS1 plays better than Saturn.... on a 2D game? Whut? Was the game programmed poorly, or is there a legitimate reason for it? I mean, I've heard the reason why SOTN runs worse (something about it being 3d but made to look 2d, or something?) - is it similar to that?

Metal Slug is one of the coolest games of any genre of all time. So its unfair to compare.
In the Hunt Ive had such little time with. However Im sure its worth a run through. Similar graphic style. I hate that somehow the Saturn version runs slower than the PS1 version. Should have been something the system did much better.

That's a damn shame. Especially as something like this ideally should run smoothly because of how much action there is - like Gunstar Heroes. Oh well. I guess it isn't as close of as competition as I initially thought it may be!

Another vote for Metal Slug. There is fun to be had with In the Hunt though. If you have a PS1 you might want to try that version.

I quite enjoyed in the hunt on the ps1. I doubt that you will find a cheap copy though, it seems to be even more expensive than the saturn version. Emulate it before you buy.
Metal slug on the other hand has a bunch of ports, some cheap ones on the wii and ps2 if I remember rightly. It's a good game but I can never be attending bosses without using 200 continues

SNK Arcade Classics volume 1 has the first game, and I think it's cheaper than the Metal Slug Anthology. Also a PS2/Wii release.

Yeah looks like Metal Slug Anthology for PS2 has risen quite a bit. My local game store sells it for 12.99 still (saw a copy the other week) which is well below market value. The Wii version seems to still be affordable but Ive heard it has some issues.

In The Hunt is a nice game but Metal Slug is one of the greats.
The Wii version of MS Anthology suffers because for some reason all but one of the control options has bolted on motion control which was an idiotic thing to do. It also screws up because there is no classic controller support.
What saves it is it supports the Gamecube controller - but even that is almost screwed up because it doesn't work with the dpad. You have to use the analogue stick but because the GC stick has that octagonal piece around the base of the stick it actually works really well as you can use it to lock it into 8 positions which works really well for the MS games. As far as I can see the games themselves play fine - they might not be as accurate as the originals re slowdown etc - don't know enough about the series.
The PAL version of the PS2 Anthology is a shoddy, letterboxed , laggy mess with no 60Hz option- avoid. The US NTSC version is probably fine but I've no experience of it.
In PAL land we also got individual releases of MS3, 4 and 5 on PS2 and they are pretty nice with 60Hz modes etc but of course you have to buy 3 seperate games and you won't get 1,2 or X that way. MS3 is the pick of those as it has a couple of fun mini-games on the disc too.

We also got individual releases of 3, 4, 5 but for XBOX while guys got it for PS2. Odd but that's how it worked out.
