Has anyone noticed the sound that comes from the Saturn? I was playing some Xbox 360 games and then played Hexen for Saturn and noticed the sound was much better. Does the Saturn have a dedicated sound chip inside? I have also noticed other games with great sound. Just wanted to add my opinion.

Yes, it's called the Saturn Custom Sound Processor, it's Yamaha developed.

PS1 apparently had a really good sound chip too which was removed after the first model to cut costs.
I get the impression that all early CD-based consoles must have had good sound chips to show off the new technology.
I'm still in the process of sorting out my audio set-up, but I'm interested to hear how my £45 Saturn compares to other sources that now cost much more.

And just to add, the reason modern consoles probably sound worse is that everyone learnt Sony's trick -- downgrading non-essential components like sound chips to cut costs means you can slash the RRP of the console and limit the damage.
Sony claims it deliberately started a price war with the PS1 vs Saturn because they knew Sega's machine so complex (in terms of sourcing components from multiple suppliers and the manufacturing process itself), sufficient cost-cutting would be impossible. The PS1 seemed to get a price cut every few months between 97-98 -- at Xmas 98 I'm sure it was £99. Saturn will have cost way more than that just to get onto the shop floor.
