Recently decided to get back into the Saturn again and ordered a Japanese Saturn online (previously owned a PAL Saturn but it couldn't read discs very well and I gave it away). The only issue is that it doesn't come with any cables, so I have to get the rest myself. I understand that using a New Zealand Saturn power cable will kill the console due to the voltage difference, so I've ordered the stepdown transformer to take care of that, but I'm still unsure about what cable I'll need. The stepdown transformer I got is also an adapter for US power cables (I hear that US and Japanese power cables are similar enough in voltage that this shouldn't be a problem) so I'll be needing a US power cable. From what I've seen there's two kinds of US Saturn power cables, ones that are notched and ones that are not. The Saturn I ordered is the grey first model version, and I checked online and it came with a non-notched power cable. The notched cable is a lot easier for me to get shipped to New Zealand as there's a site I order from regularly that has the notched cables in stock but not the non-notched cables, so does it actually make a difference if the cable I use for the system is notched or not?

Notched?
Any standard figure of 8 cable will do.

Notched? Any standard figure of 8 cable will do. From what I gathered the notched cables are the ones where the plug that goes into the wall have holes in the prongs that enter the plughole, like this one: I can't see this making a difference, but my confusion came when I was looking for sites that stock Saturn power cables and saw that one was selling two seperate cables, claiming that one was suitable for Model 1 Saturns and one was suitable for Model 2 Saturns due to being notched, which lead me to believe that there was something preventing you from being able to use one on the other. www.goatstore.com/Products/Sega/Saturn/Saturn_Hardware/361655/Power_Cord_Figure_8_for_System_1/www.goatstore.com/Products/Sega/Saturn/Saturn_Hardware/361660/Power_Cord_Notched/I won't be ordering from this site since the shipping prices to New Zealand are atrocious, but the descriptions concerned me regardless so I thought it was best to check first.

The "notched" cable won't fit in the older socket. It's got a squared off end as it's designed to keep polarity in line.
