Ill admit Ive always played Shooters on Saturn or any system using the cropped or adjusted home console TV Mode. I never use the original Arcade mode if available. Its a shame but Ive always done it because of the TV ratio.
Last night I took a 36 inch LED and turned it sideways and tried Galactic Attack in Arcade mode. It completely changed the game for me. So much more detail, such a bigger playing surface. It made an already great shooter 10 times better.
The only issue is that it wasnt a perfect solution.
Any of you shooter nuts have an interesting setup to get the original arcade aspect ratios? Any good cheap options?

I have a friend who uses a wall mounted monitor that can be rotated 90 degrees, best solution I've seen to date as you can flip it by just reaching out and twisting it. Outside of that, I think you've already tried the alternative.
Something cheap like this:
Wall Mounting Bracket

You tate a modern TV and it's still going to be the wrong aspect ratio for shooters like that, Galactic Attack is a 3:4 game not 9:16. Play with the TV the right way around and just use a big TV and you will be getting the same amount of space you did on a arcade monitor from the era anyway.

I splashed out and got a decent tateable broadcast monitor. Well worth it considering the large number of vertical shmups for the system.
If I was really flush I might consider getting another - one for permanent tate and one for normal 4:3 games. Not that I've got the space !

I'll take a couple next time I have a tate session.

I remember flipping my CRT back in the day. You'd have to wait 5-10 minutes before turning it on or otherwise the colors would be screwed up. Once you go flipped, you don't go back, it makes such a huge difference.
You don't actually have to flip the TV for Galactic Attack though. You can go into arcade mode and play it like R-Type. It gives you the option to change the d-pad controls.
